trainer –<br />
exercise science<br />
This course is the most comp<strong>re</strong>hensive and<br />
cutting edge of its kind, p<strong>re</strong>paring students<br />
for this emerging ca<strong>re</strong>er. The New York State<br />
Department of Labor identified this ca<strong>re</strong>er<br />
as one of New York State’s “top 25 emerging<br />
occupations through 2016.” Students learn<br />
the systems of the human body and their<br />
inter<strong>re</strong>lationship to health, fitness, exercise,<br />
nutrition, st<strong>re</strong>ngth and conditioning,<br />
fitness assessment, and designing exercise<br />
programs for the athlete, general, and special<br />
populations. Students will learn principles<br />
necessary to diffe<strong>re</strong>ntiate facts from fallacies<br />
as they <strong>re</strong>late to the human body, exercise,<br />
and nutrition. This comp<strong>re</strong>hensive course<br />
integrates classroom work with practical<br />
hands-on personal training/health and fitness<br />
skills. Successful completion of the course will<br />
p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong> students to earn nationally acc<strong>re</strong>dited<br />
certification from the Academy of Applied<br />
Personal Training Education (AAPTE) and/or<br />
the American Council on Exercise (ACE).<br />
This coursework builds a solid foundation<br />
for educational and ca<strong>re</strong>er inte<strong>re</strong>sts such as<br />
athletic training, physical education, sports<br />
medicine, nutrition, exercise psychologist,<br />
and associated, allied health ca<strong>re</strong>ers.<br />
Students will learn:<br />
• anatomy and physiology of human<br />
performance<br />
• the human body and its <strong>re</strong>lationship to<br />
exercise mechanics<br />
• exercise program design for st<strong>re</strong>ngth,<br />
endurance, and cardio<strong>re</strong>spiratory fitness<br />
• designing a weight management program<br />
through exercise and nutrition<br />
Course available: Grades 11–12 Course length: 2 years<br />
Placement: Regular C<strong>re</strong>dits: Up to 4 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits a year<br />
earning high school c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />
Students completing this two-year course may <strong>re</strong>ceive up to 8 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits OR distributed c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />

Upon successful completion of this course and<br />
certification exam, students will be qualified<br />
to seek employment as a nationally acc<strong>re</strong>dited<br />
certified personal trainer in the health and<br />
fitness industry. This profession allows for<br />
flexible schedules and the advancement for<br />
continued personal, professional, and academic<br />
advancement. Typical job titles include certified<br />
personal trainer and st<strong>re</strong>ngth and conditioning<br />
coach. Workplaces include gyms, health clubs,<br />
fitness studios, in-home training, schools, and<br />
assisted living facilities.<br />

participate in supervised, <strong>re</strong>al-world, work-based<br />
learning offerings that include clinics, shadow<br />
days/internships, or paid Co-Op experiences at<br />
