Note: This course <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>s students to wear<br />
uniforms and to complete physical exams<br />
befo<strong>re</strong> participating in clinical rotations.<br />
In this course, students will learn the skills<br />
needed to p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong> for basic, entry-level jobs in a<br />
variety of health-<strong>re</strong>lated occupations. They will<br />
study anatomy, physiology, and microbiology,<br />
and learn to understand and implement<br />
universal p<strong>re</strong>cautions. Students will also develop<br />
effective communication skills and the ability to<br />
work in a team environment. Computer modules<br />
a<strong>re</strong> incorporated into class work.<br />
Students will be trained in:<br />
• sterilizing procedu<strong>re</strong>s and infection control<br />
• patient wheelchair transport<br />
• bed to wheelchair transfer<br />
• p<strong>re</strong>paring an open/closed hospital bed<br />
• taking and <strong>re</strong>cording pulse,<br />
blood p<strong>re</strong>ssu<strong>re</strong>, and temperatu<strong>re</strong><br />
• measuring height and weight<br />
• understanding nutrition and<br />
special dietary needs<br />
• body mechanics<br />
• anatomy and physiology<br />
Course available: Grades 11 or 12 Course length: 1 or 2 years<br />
Placement: Skills C<strong>re</strong>dits: Up to 4 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits a year<br />
earning high school c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />
Students completing this two-year course may <strong>re</strong>ceive up to 8 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits OR distributed c<strong>re</strong>dits*<br />
using either or both of the following:<br />
1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Ca<strong>re</strong>er and Financial Management<br />
0.5 c<strong>re</strong>dit Health<br />
ca<strong>re</strong>er opportunities<br />
Upon completion of this course, students will<br />
be able to work in several non-licensed entrylevel<br />
positions in hospitals, clinics, dietary<br />
departments, adult day t<strong>re</strong>atment centers,<br />
and nursing homes. Graduates may opt to<br />
attend a post-secondary institution or college<br />
to continue their education in a health ca<strong>re</strong>er<br />
field. Typical job titles in healthca<strong>re</strong> include<br />
transport assistant, transporter, bed and bath<br />
team member, hospital bed maker, adult day<br />
t<strong>re</strong>atment counselor, patient communicator,<br />
and dietary aide.<br />

Students in this course <strong>re</strong>inforce their skills in a<br />
supervised, clinical environment at a hospital or<br />
nursing home.<br />
Those who meet all eligibility <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>ments<br />
may participate in supervised, <strong>re</strong>al-world,<br />
work-based learning offerings that include<br />
clinics, shadow days and internships, at<br />
workplace sites such as:<br />
