cosmetology<br />

This course is certified by New York State.<br />

Our curriculum consists of 1,000 hours of both<br />

written and practical training. This includes all<br />

phases in the field of cosmetology with detail to<br />

new, innovative, c<strong>re</strong>ative, and functional<br />

methods. This will p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong> our students for a<br />

<strong>re</strong>warding and profitable entry into the beauty<br />

industry. We p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong> students for their New<br />

York State Board Cosmetology exams, which<br />

they must pass in order to become licensed<br />

Cosmetologists in New York State.<br />

Students will learn a number of skills in a<br />

wide variety of a<strong>re</strong>as, including:<br />

• hair shaping, styling, coloring,<br />

and straightening<br />

• hair extensions<br />

• thermal curling, finger waving<br />

• barbering<br />

• makeup art and skin ca<strong>re</strong><br />

• manicu<strong>re</strong>s and pedicu<strong>re</strong>s<br />

• salon management and professional ethics<br />

• moral and ethical development<br />

Course available: Grades 11–12 Course length: 2 years<br />

Placement: Regular C<strong>re</strong>dits: Up to 4 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits a year<br />

Admissions criteria: Students must demonstrate good fine motor dexterity<br />

earning high school c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />

Students completing this two-year course may <strong>re</strong>ceive up to 8 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits OR distributed c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />

using any or all of the following:<br />

1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Ca<strong>re</strong>er and Financial Management 1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Science<br />

1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit English<br />

Young stylists will also learn:<br />

• texturizing<br />

• multi-dimensional hair color<br />

• st<strong>re</strong>aking and lightening hair<br />

• p<strong>re</strong>cision hair cutting<br />

• eco-friendly facial technique<br />

• organic color methods<br />

• bonding, fusion, extensions, weaving<br />

applications, and wig designing<br />

• permanent waving<br />

• chemical straightening techniques<br />

• image transformation<br />

• professional/client communication skills<br />

ca<strong>re</strong>er opportunities<br />

Beauty-<strong>re</strong>lated ca<strong>re</strong>ers offer flexible hours and<br />

opportunities to work from home or to own<br />

shops or spas. Many graduates attend college and<br />

often use their skills to help pay expenses.<br />

Typical job titles in the field of cosmetology<br />

include hair color technician, hair cutting<br />

technician, haird<strong>re</strong>sser’s assistant, hair stylist,<br />

perm technician, makeup artist, nail technician,<br />

salon manager or owner, scalp/hair specialist,<br />

skin ca<strong>re</strong> technician, teacher, waxing technician,<br />

and wig technician.<br />

This is a New York State approved 1,000-hour<br />

cosmetology course that qualifies students<br />

to take the state licensing exam. (To meet<br />

<strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>ments, students must attend 1 or mo<strong>re</strong><br />

summer sessions.)<br />

Upon completion of this course, students<br />

may <strong>re</strong>ceive college c<strong>re</strong>dits subject to the<br />

entrance <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>ments of each institution and<br />

any additional criteria that may have been<br />

established. Cur<strong>re</strong>nt college ag<strong>re</strong>ements include:<br />

• Mercy College (Dual-Enrollment)<br />

• New England Institute of Technology (NEIT)<br />

work experience opportunities<br />

Students who meet all eligibility <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>ments<br />

may participate in supervised, <strong>re</strong>al-world,<br />

work-based learning offerings that include<br />

clinics, job shadow days, and internships at<br />

workplace sites such as:<br />
