and alternative
energy
The field of “green tech” continues to grow
along with the demand for individuals with the
knowledge to move our communities towards
a sustainable future. This 1-year course for
seniors will address topics on renewable and
alternative energy and current trends in the
“greening” of buildings such as green roofs/
walls and other issues of sustainability facing
us today. Students will use the resources of
the Brookville site and local experts in their
exploration of future Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathamatics (STEM) related
careers and/or college courses of study.
Students will learn about:
• Solar, wind, and geothermal forms of
energy and observe/monitor systems
in use.
• Methods of water conservation
• Alternative and renewable fuels
• Reducing our carbon footprint
• Waste treatment to create usable energy
• Green construction: materials and
practices, Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) certified
buildings
Course Available: Grade 12 Course length: 1 year
Placement: Regular Credits: Up to 4 CTE credits a year
Admission criteria: Strong math skills, good fine and gross motor coordination and spatial abilities
Classes held at the Nassau BOCES Outdoor Environmental Education Center Brookville location
(buses available to and from Barry Tech).
career opportunities
A green economy is dependent on people
who understand energy efficiency by using
renewable energy and/or recycling and other
green practices. “Green collar” jobs are skilled
employment designed to conserve energy,
restore the natural environment, and generate
clean power. Many of these job titles are related
to the construction trades and job titles include
carpenters, plumbers, electricians, installers
and inspectors, and energy auditors. Green
careers requiring 4 years or more of college
include titles such as environmental engineers,
geoscientists (as consultants when assessing
geothermal heat sources), and architects.

Seniors may choose to continue their studies at
a technical school or college to further explore
this field. The list below is just a small sampling
of the programs offered through the SUNY
system for the student interested in pursuing
a course of study in green technologies and
renewable energy.
