This course is certified by New York State.<br />

This course will teach students the skills and<br />

knowledge necessary to ca<strong>re</strong> for horses. Students<br />

will learn how to properly feed, handle, and<br />

manage diffe<strong>re</strong>nt b<strong>re</strong>eds of horses using all the<br />

equipment and tools <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>d to manage a horse<br />

facility. They will also gain an understanding of<br />

the basic science, behavior, and proper nutrition<br />

of horses.<br />

Students will develop essential skills, such as:<br />

• cleaning and maintenance of riding<br />

equipment<br />

• feeding and grooming<br />

• riding for exercise and training<br />

• diagnosis and administration<br />

of first aid for common injuries and ailments<br />

• stable and horse farm management<br />

Note: Horse Science and Management is taught<br />

at a separate, fully-equipped facility dedicated to<br />

this course. The North Sho<strong>re</strong> Equestrian Center<br />

is located on Long Island University’s C.W. Post<br />

Campus, 720 Northern Boulevard (Route 25A),<br />

Students completing this two-year course may <strong>re</strong>ceive up to 8 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits OR distributed c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />

With mo<strong>re</strong> than 100 horse farms located<br />

in <strong>Nassau</strong> and Suffolk counties — and the<br />

significant use of horses for show, racing, and<br />

leisu<strong>re</strong> riding on Long Island — the need for<br />

well-trained personnel is growing at racetracks,<br />

b<strong>re</strong>eding farms, and riding stables. The<strong>re</strong> is also<br />

a demand for trained professionals in veterinary<br />

offices locally, nationally, and internationally.<br />

Students who complete this program may<br />

find employment in a variety of settings that<br />

<strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong> equestrian skills. Many graduates pursue<br />

further education in equine science, veterinary<br />

assisting, animal science, veterinary technology,<br />

or veterinary science. Typical job titles in this<br />

field include assistant trainer, b<strong>re</strong>eding farm<br />

assistant manager, race horse groomer, exercise<br />

rider, show stable employee, and veterinary<br />

assistant.<br />
