therapy aide<br />
This course is certified by New York State.<br />
Note: This course <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>s students to wear<br />
uniforms and to complete physical exams<br />
befo<strong>re</strong> participating in clinical rotations.<br />
Physical therapy helps patients <strong>re</strong>gain function<br />
and improve mobility, <strong>re</strong>lieve pain, and p<strong>re</strong>vent<br />
permanent physical disabilities by <strong>re</strong>storing,<br />
maintaining, and promoting overall fitness<br />
and health. This entry-level course will p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong><br />
students to become part of a <strong>re</strong>habilitation<br />
team. Students will assist in performing patient<br />
positioning and range-of-motion exercises while<br />
developing an understanding of both applications.<br />
Students will learn theo<strong>re</strong>tical concepts and<br />
practice skills, then move into a patient ca<strong>re</strong><br />
setting whe<strong>re</strong> they will gain firsthand experience<br />
with patients and hone their skills.<br />
Therapy aides-in-training will learn:<br />
• anatomy and physiology<br />
• medical terminology<br />
• how to measu<strong>re</strong> vital signs<br />
• range-of-motion exercises<br />
• use of canes, crutches, and walkers<br />
• massage therapy<br />
• hot packs/ice applications<br />
• st<strong>re</strong>tches/st<strong>re</strong>ngthening exercises<br />
• whirlpool therapy<br />
• fitness, nutrition, and weight control<br />
• office duties<br />
Course available: Grades 11–12 Course length: 2 years<br />
Placement: Regular C<strong>re</strong>dits: Up to 4 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits a year<br />
Admissions criteria: Science background strongly <strong>re</strong>commended. Course may <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong> heavy lifting.<br />

Students who complete this course a<strong>re</strong> eligible<br />
to obtain certificates of completion from<br />
Barry Tech and a<strong>re</strong> employable as physical<br />
therapy aides. Graduates will be p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong>d<br />
for employment as non-licensed workers,<br />
performing tasks under the supervision of<br />
professionals within a <strong>re</strong>habilitation team<br />
and working closely with physical therapists,<br />
physical therapy assistants, chiropractors, and<br />
occupational therapists.<br />
Physical therapy aides may work in a variety<br />
of settings including nursing homes, pediatric<br />
centers, hospitals, private practices, adult day<br />
t<strong>re</strong>atment programs for the physically and<br />
mentally challenged, and in non-traditional<br />
settings whe<strong>re</strong> a physical therapist and<br />
occupational therapist a<strong>re</strong> employed. Many<br />
graduates continue their education and pursue<br />
an associate or bachelor’s deg<strong>re</strong>e in physical<br />
therapy, occupational therapy, massage therapy,<br />
or other health-<strong>re</strong>lated service ca<strong>re</strong>ers. Typical<br />
job titles in the field of physical therapy include<br />
physical therapy aide, <strong>re</strong>habilitation aide, and<br />
occupational therapy aide.<br />

In this course, theory is applied in clinical<br />
affiliations with various healthca<strong>re</strong> institutions.<br />
Professionals from many <strong>re</strong>habilitation<br />
disciplines deliver p<strong>re</strong>sentations that orient<br />
students to their individual roles. Students will<br />
gain hands-on experience in a hospital or private<br />
practice.<br />
Students who meet all eligibility <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>ments<br />
may participate in supervised, <strong>re</strong>al-world,<br />
work-based learning offerings that include<br />
clinics, shadow days, internships, or paid<br />
