auto collision<br />
technician<br />
This course is certified by New York State.<br />
This course provides practical instruction<br />
in basic auto body <strong>re</strong>pair, and moves on to<br />
advanced techniques and technology. In the<br />
second year, students estimate <strong>re</strong>pair costs<br />
on all vehicles, do all the <strong>re</strong>pairs for actual<br />
customers, and a<strong>re</strong> expected to meet or<br />
surpass industry standards.<br />
This program integrates environment<br />
sustainability and cur<strong>re</strong>nt health issues into<br />
the curriculum through lessons on specific<br />
<strong>re</strong>gulations for the control of hazardous air<br />
pollutants. Students will learn NYSDEC/EPA<br />
<strong>re</strong>gulations <strong>re</strong>garding paints and equipment.<br />
New, mo<strong>re</strong> environmentally friendly paints<br />
and processes a<strong>re</strong> also integrated into the<br />
curriculum.<br />
Upon completion of this course, students<br />
may earn up to 4-CAR (Inter-Industry<br />
Confe<strong>re</strong>nce on Auto Collision Repair) points.<br />
Students will learn how to:<br />
• use auto body plastics<br />
• work with specialized equipment<br />
and spray paints<br />
• <strong>re</strong>sto<strong>re</strong> cars to their original condition<br />
• customize (an inc<strong>re</strong>asingly popular<br />
part of the field)<br />
They will also learn techniques in:<br />
• sheet metal straightening<br />
• sheet metal alignment<br />
• plastic <strong>re</strong>pair<br />
• painting and <strong>re</strong>finishing<br />
• compounding and polishing<br />
• diagnosing and measuring damage<br />
• estimating <strong>re</strong>pairs<br />
Course available: Grades 11–12 Course length: 2 years<br />
Placement: Regular C<strong>re</strong>dits: Up to 4 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits a year<br />
Admissions criteria: Strong gross and fine motor coordination and attention to detail.<br />

Students completing this two-year course may <strong>re</strong>ceive up to 8 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits OR distributed c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />
using either or both of the following:<br />

1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit English<br />

This 2-year course will p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong> students for an<br />
entry-level position in the auto body industry.<br />
Graduates who enroll in college may pursue<br />
studies in automotive design, commercial art,<br />
or engineering, and often use their skills to<br />
help pay expenses. Typical job titles in this field<br />
include automotive detailer, insurance adjuster,<br />
masker/helper, parts counterperson, <strong>re</strong>pair<br />
shop owner, shop fo<strong>re</strong>person, service manager,<br />
custom spray painter, and antique car <strong>re</strong>sto<strong>re</strong>r.<br />
