plumbing<br />
This course is certified by New York State.<br />
This 2-year course will cover both the<br />
<strong>re</strong>sidential and commercial components of the<br />
field, applying theory to practical situations.<br />
In the first year, students will focus on basic<br />
plumbing skills, while in the second year, they<br />
will learn advanced skills such as designing,<br />
sizing, estimating, and working with hydronic<br />
heating systems and oil and gas-fi<strong>re</strong>d boilers.<br />
Young plumbers and heating technicians will<br />
learn to use professional equipment to install,<br />
<strong>re</strong>place, and <strong>re</strong>pair faucets, sinks, toilets, and<br />
water heaters. Students will also fit, assemble,<br />
and p<strong>re</strong>pa<strong>re</strong> all types of piping (steel, cast iron,<br />
copper, and plastic) for soil waste, vent, and<br />
potable water applications.<br />
Students will practice:<br />
• installing bathroom fixtu<strong>re</strong>s<br />
• <strong>re</strong>ading blueprints, drawings, and<br />
schematics<br />
• following the <strong>re</strong>qui<strong>re</strong>ments of the<br />
plumbing code<br />
Specific lessons include:<br />
• site p<strong>re</strong>paration<br />
• estimation<br />
• installation of drain, waste, vent, and hot<br />
and cold water distribution systems<br />
• protection of potable water<br />
• heating and ventilation<br />
Course available: Grades 11–12 Course length: 2 years<br />
Placement: Regular C<strong>re</strong>dits: Up to 4 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits a year<br />
Admissions criteria: Strong math skills and manual dexterity<br />
earning high school c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />
Students completing this two-year course may <strong>re</strong>ceive up to 8 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits OR distributed c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />
using any or all of the following:<br />
1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Ca<strong>re</strong>er and Financial Management 1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Math–Specialized<br />
1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit English 1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Science<br />
ca<strong>re</strong>er opportunities<br />
The continuing need for <strong>re</strong>novation and<br />
maintenance of systems in power plants, water<br />
and wastewater t<strong>re</strong>atment plants, pipelines,<br />
office buildings, factories, and <strong>re</strong>sidential<br />
buildings inc<strong>re</strong>ases the demand for qualified<br />
plumbing and heating workers. Legislation<br />
mandating the installation of fi<strong>re</strong> sprinkler<br />
systems in existing structu<strong>re</strong>s has also inc<strong>re</strong>ased<br />
job opportunities.<br />
Graduates often choose to continue their<br />
studies at a technical school or college in order<br />
to enhance their ca<strong>re</strong>er opportunities in fields<br />
such as design, engineering, steamfitting, and<br />
power plant maintenance and operation. Typical<br />
job titles in plumbing and heating include<br />
app<strong>re</strong>ntice, helper, mechanic, journey worker,<br />
pipefitter, steamfitter, and master plumber.<br />

Upon completion of this course, students<br />
