This course is certified by New York State.<br />

If students complete a two-year sequence,<br />

which includes Computer Network Technology,<br />

academic c<strong>re</strong>dits may be awarded (see page 54).<br />

Students will study topics in depth, including<br />

p<strong>re</strong>ventive maintenance, diagnostics, multimedia<br />

technology, computer and network theory,<br />

digital electronics, and personal computer<br />

hardwa<strong>re</strong>.<br />

To <strong>re</strong>ceive A+ Certification, it is necessary to<br />

pass both the A+ Essentials and 1 of 3 System<br />

Specialties exams.<br />

Technicians-in-training will learn how to:<br />

• develop a troubleshooting strategy<br />

• fix PC hardwa<strong>re</strong> and softwa<strong>re</strong> problems<br />

• install and configu<strong>re</strong> hard disks, CD-ROMs,<br />

and the complete family of Windows<br />

Operating Systems<br />

• safely disassemble and <strong>re</strong>assemble a PC<br />

• upgrade memory<br />

• work with basic network technology<br />

including administration of networks<br />

• network applications and hardwa<strong>re</strong><br />

Students will familiarize themselves with<br />

hardwa<strong>re</strong> and softwa<strong>re</strong> including:<br />

• CPUs<br />

• CD and DVD-ROMs<br />

• memory<br />

• Windows Operating Systems<br />

• printers<br />

• storage media<br />

Course available: Grades 11–12 Course length: 2 years<br />

Placement: Regular C<strong>re</strong>dits: Up to 4 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits a year<br />

Admissions criteria: Above-average academic skills and visual acuity<br />

earning high school c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />

Students completing this two-year course may <strong>re</strong>ceive up to 8 CTE c<strong>re</strong>dits OR distributed c<strong>re</strong>dits<br />

using any or all of the following:<br />

1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Ca<strong>re</strong>er and Financial Management 1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit Science<br />

1.0 c<strong>re</strong>dit English<br />

They will learn procedu<strong>re</strong>s for working with<br />

basic network technology including:<br />

• administration of network applications<br />

• monitor interface<br />

• operating system installation<br />

• system teardown<br />

• troubleshooting<br />

• upgrades<br />

ca<strong>re</strong>er opportunities<br />

Students who complete this course a<strong>re</strong> equipped<br />

with the skills needed for employment in the<br />

computer industry, and a<strong>re</strong> often <strong>re</strong>cruited<br />

by local companies. Graduates f<strong>re</strong>quently<br />

pursue further training at technical schools,<br />

colleges, or in the military. Typical job titles<br />

in computer technology include field service<br />

technician, technical support specialist, help<br />

desk technician, desktop analyst, and entry-level<br />

computer technician.<br />
