PYOGENIC COCCI<br />

THESE organisms arc found in various acute inflammatory<br />

and suppurative conditions. They are assodated<br />

with pus formation, and arc therefore designated<br />

"pyogenic." The most freqncnt are:<br />

1')'tl't'ptOC()CCIiS hacmolylicus.<br />

STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS<br />

]Jlorphology.-Spherieal cocci arranged in irregular<br />

clusters, the individual cells being approximately<br />

0'8-0'!)/1, in diameter. Single forms and pairs may also<br />

be noted.<br />

S ta-ining .-' . Gram -positive.<br />

Culiu.l'c.-Aerobc and facultative u,llacrohe; telllperature<br />

range--lOO-42° C., optillllUn-37° C.; growth<br />

occurs on ordinary nutrient media.<br />

Agar stroke-thick, opaque, moist, shiny, "oilpaint<br />

"-like growth which develops a characteristic<br />

golden or orange-yellow colour.<br />

Colonies on agar-circular discs, relatively large even<br />

after 24, hours (2-3 mm. in diameter), and presenting<br />

the same characters as the stroke culture.<br />
