nuss annual report 2006 Artist’s impression of the redeveloped Kent Ridge Guild House Supporting the local arts scene PG efforts to connect with its 160,000-strong alumni by joining hands with its largest alumni body, NUSS. As NUS’ oldest and largest organised alumni body, the Society strives to achieve this common goal of inculcating a sense of belonging among graduates by hosting annual ‘NUSS New Alumni Dinners’ in conjunction with the University’s commencement ceremonies. The year under review was no exception as NUSS hosted a dinner party at Suntec City Guild House for the NUS Class of 2006 on 22 July. The Society also rallied around the University’s fundraising efforts by encouraging members to support the NUS Annual Giving 2006 – a meaningful campaign to provide financial assistance to needy undergraduates. With landmark events like the NUS-NUSS Centennial Golf Challenge, notable developments like the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Alumni Complex and lasting traditions like the NUSS New Alumni Dinner, the year 2006 witnessed the strengthening of the symbiotic relationship and close-knit bond that the Society shares with NUS. Giving Back to the Community Steadfast in its philosophy of contributing to the community, NUSS has supported the local arts scene, lent a helping hand to the less privileged and nurtured young minds in 2006. A loyal supporter of the Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO), the Society gave generously in support of its Celebrities Concert in November 2006 and co-presented the production of All That Jazz in December 2006. In recognition, the National Arts Council presented the Society with the Arts Supporter Award. Fun and games on Children’s Day Continuing our service to society, NUSS hosted a Chinese New Year Festive Gathering for senior citizens from various homes and a fun-filled Children’s Day Party for less privileged children. Forming friendships through SMP NUSS members also brought Christmas cheer to almost 100 children and elderly folk through the annual Adopt a Wish programme. The Student Mentorship Programme celebrated the completion of its eighth year in 2006 and continues to bring together NUS undergraduates and secondary school students in a peer mentoring relationship. Individually, NUSS members have also done the Society proud. The National Day Awards 2006 recognised the contributions of several NUSS members in nation building. Notably, NUSS Past President Mr Anwarul Haque and Emeritus Professor Edwin Thumboo were respectively conferred the prestigious Public Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. Reaching Beyond Our Shores As part of the Society’s strategic direction, steps were taken to extend NUSS’ presence and relationship building efforts beyond Singapore. The ongoing International Outreach Programme to Cambodia continued into 2006 with a week-long Teacher Training Expedition in June. This marked the Society’s second trip there since the inception of the programme in 2005. Establishing relationships with graduate associations around the world has been an enduring aspiration of the Society. In November 2006, a reciprocal agreement was signed between NUSS and The Graduate Union of the University of Melbourne. Through the External Alumni Relations Networking Sub-Committee, members now enjoy reciprocity with two graduate clubs in Australia, two in the United States of America, and one each in the United Kingdom and Canada.
