GENERAL FEATURES<br />
Williamson County, which occupies the south-central part of the<br />
region covered by this report (pi. 1), is bounded on the norfch by<br />
Cheatham and Davidson Counties, on the east by Rutherford County,<br />
and on the northwest by Dickson County. Its county seat, Franklin<br />
(population, 3,377), lies about 20 miles south of Nashville on the<br />
Louisville & Nashville Railroad.<br />
Like Sumner County, Williamson County is divided into two<br />
physiographic districts of approximately equal area by the Highland<br />
Rim escarpment, which trends nearly due south through its center.<br />
The western half of the county, most of which is drained northward<br />
by the South Fork and other branches of the Harpeth River, is a part
