The Man
Despite the significant impact Fiore’s treatise has
had on the modern reconstruction of historical fight-
*2O&"%'E-&*2&>"%'*FB1"%-&"%6*+"%3- U very little is known
of the man who bore the name Fiore dei Liberi. To
8"'3-&O*@32&':3&3a'32E*@3&"28&$2O$*2O&%3E3"%F:&I3*2O&
conducted world-wide by a variety of historical fencing
schools and academies 3 the only definitive source
for Fiore’s biography has been the prologue written
by Fiore himself contained in each of the three versions
of the treatise. 4
