Peter Ilsted

Ilsted is best known for his mezzotints,
and did not paint many oil paintings.
He was a close friend of Vilhelm Hammershøi
and Carl Holsøe. When his
sister married Vilhelm Hammershøi in
1891, Ilsted became better acquainted
with Hammershøi's paintings and
was inspired by both Hammershøi's
art and his sense of quiet interiors.
The atmosphere in the interiors by
Ilsted is largely created by the play of
sunlight on the walls and furniture.
A woman or a little girl sometimes
is seen in the room - usually Ilsted's
wife or one of his daughters.
