Examination :<br />

SUbjects wer e examined by a standdrd c l i n i c a l ex amfna t.Lcn<br />

procedure. First, a general assessment: for pallor, icteru s,<br />

pedal oedema , and the t a k i ng o f body temperature, blood<br />

pressure and pulse measurements was do ne with the patient in<br />

sitting posture . Next, with the patient l ying on the<br />

examination COUGh, breast, abdominal and further l eg<br />

examination we re done f ollowe d by l och ia a nd pe rineal<br />

inspection and f inally by a bimanual pelvic examination , where<br />

i nd icat e d.<br />

The indications for bimanual pelvic e xamina tion includ ed<br />

a complaint of l owe r a bdomi nal pain, the f i nd i ng of a l owe r<br />

abdominal tenderness and/or a pelvic mass during a bd ominal<br />

palpation and the presence of bright red lochia .<br />

Whe re there were ot he r symptoms or signs s uggest ive of<br />

other system d isord e r s such as respiratory, or c ar.d i ac<br />

disorders, then a more detailed ex aminatinn of that s ys t em was<br />

perfo rmed . A sample of blood was then final l y taken for<br />

haemoglobin analysis. All examination findings were recorded<br />

on Study Form B (APPENDIX D).<br />

Ora l t empe r a t ur e r ea d i ngs were taken using a digital<br />

cent igrade t he r mome t e r and blood pres s ure was mea s ured wi th<br />

SUbjects in the sitting postur e and after they had been at<br />

r est f or at least 15 minutes. A digital sp hyg manometer with<br />

standard adult cuff width (5 .5 inches) was used. If blood
