For t hese SUbjects t herefore t heir anaemia can clearly be<br />

attributed mos tly to the events a t the time o f labour.<br />

POSTPART UM HYPERTENSION<br />

The 35 i ndividuals who we r e found to have postpartum<br />

hypertension at follow up , were compared to those who had<br />

normal blood pressures to i dentify possible risk factors.<br />

Univariate a nalysis revealed no s tatistical diff e r e nce!" i n the<br />

distribut ions of t he socio-demographic variables of age, a nd<br />

ed ucation in t hose SUbjects who had hypertension as co mpared<br />

to t hose who had normal blood pressures.<br />

The distribution of SUbjects by ethnic groups howe ve r<br />

differed statistically (p=O ,02 ) . The difference was clearly<br />

due t o t he i ncreased proportion of SUbjects of northern e t hnic<br />

origins in the hypertensive group; 40.0\ as opposed t o 11 .4\<br />

i n the no n-hypertensive gro up . The RR for postpartum<br />

hypertension in SUbjects wi th northern ethnic origin was 2.75
