TYPE OF DELIVERY: The majority of SUbjects 9 8 .1% ( 46 3 ) , had<br />

spontaneous vaginal deliveries, and only 9 SUbjects had<br />

va cuum- a ssis t e d delivery. Obstetri c forceps are rar e l y used at<br />

this hos p i t a l a nd no SUb j e c t was delivered by this method<br />

during the period o f study. Mediolateral episiotomy was<br />

performed in the ma n ageme n t of 21.6% of labours . TABLE 1.6.<br />

DURATION OF LABOUR: on ly 454 SUb j e c t s had records of the<br />

total du ration o f l a bour ; data were missing for 18 cases. The<br />

t otal duration of l a bour was calculated by atten ding midwives<br />

from the patient I 5 reported onset of l a bour to the e nd of the<br />

third stage. Va l ue s recorded ranged from 2 hz-e , 20 mi n. t o 30<br />

hrs . 33 min. with a mean of 11 hrs. 58 min. (SO ± 5 hrs . 29<br />

min. ) . The mean duration of labour for the primiparae was 13<br />

hrs. (S O ± 5hrs. 4 min. ). and that for the multiparae was 11<br />

tu-s , B min. (SO ± 5 hrs. 4 min. ). TWenty-three (5.U) of these<br />

454 SUbjects had prolonged labours of greater than 24 hours .<br />

BLOOD LOSS: The immediate b l ood los s at delivery wa s recorded<br />

f or 459 cases; data were missing for 13 sUbjects. Recorded<br />

estimated bl ood losses ranged from BO-2800 101. (millilitres),
