„...Conform autorului, principalul scop al „Populist Project” este<br />
de a prezenta relaţiile dintre cultura celebrităţii şi identitate. El<br />
este compus din mai multe lucrări: „God Loves <strong>the</strong> Dreams of<br />
Serbian Artists”, „Celebrities”, „Hometown Boys” şi „Pioneers”.<br />
Prima parte, „God Loves <strong>the</strong> Dreams of Serbian Artists”, include<br />
fotografii ale autorului alături de cei mai celebri jucatori de fotbal<br />
din lume ai momentului, ca un nou simbol. Cea de-a doua parte,<br />
„Celebrities”, înfăţişează imaginea autorului înconjurat de artişti<br />
celebri, staruri de cinema, sportivi, editori, politicieni şi soţiile<br />
lor, caricaturişti, staruri rock şi alte personalităţi publice care<br />
apar de obicei pe copertele revistelor.<br />
Partea a treia, „Hometown Boys”, este concepută ca un simulacru<br />
al Primei Reviste Sârbe de Pornografie, Artă şi Societate,<br />
constând doar din coperte ce anunţă un conţinut care nu<br />
abordează câtuşi de puţin probleme de sociologie, artă, teorie<br />
sau pornografie. Ultima parte, „Pioneers”, este realizată ca o serie<br />
de portrete ale unor celebri artişti internaţionali şi specialişti<br />
în domeniul artei, Oleg Kulik, Zbygnew Libera, Lorand Hegyi,<br />
Yuri Leiderman sau Luchezar Boyadjiev care provin din fosta<br />
Europa de Est comunistă şi care poartă cu mândrie o eşarfă<br />
roşie de pionier, aflaţi în glorioasă postură preluată din iconografia<br />
realismului socialist. Având ca scop identificarea rolului lipsei<br />
de acţiune culturală (critică) faţă de neîndeplinirea obligaţiile<br />
publice, „Populist Project” începe prin a urmări un spaţiu imaginar<br />
de acţiune. Considerând că succesul în sport sau în muzică,<br />
sau cel puţin în vânzările ambulante şi comerţul semi-legal,<br />
reprezintă instrumente contemporane importante la îndemâna<br />
membrilor unei comunităţi neprivilegiate pentru a depăşi barierele<br />
ierarhice şi a se înscrie într-un câmp mai larg de reprezentare,<br />
„Populist Project” a conturat spaţiul de acţiune culturală<br />
ca urmare a neîndeplinirii obligaţiilor publice, prin deschiderea<br />
unei galerii de imagini ce reprezintă o formă de succes anterior,<br />
descrisă de integrarea gândirii sociale articulate şi a eforturilor<br />
culturale critice. În această privinţă, rolul intelectualului autentic,<br />
ca reprezentant veritabil al unui anumit grup social neprivilegiat,<br />
militând în numele acestuia în sfera socială şi culturală, la care<br />
alţi membri ai grupului nu au acces, este înlocuit cu un intelectual<br />
artificial. Ca o formă hibridă, cu diferite tipuri de aparteneţe şi<br />
afilieri, acesta creează o legătură între diversele grupuri angajate<br />
în lupta împotriva supremaţiei sistemului actual şi transformă<br />
poziţia lor de responsabilitate faţă de cei neprivilegiaţi într-un<br />
locus al efectelor universalizante şi într-un întemeiat punct de<br />
plecare pentru o viitoare schimbare socială legitimă.”<br />

“...According to its author, <strong>the</strong> main issue of <strong>the</strong> Populist Project<br />
is to show <strong>the</strong> interactions between star-system and identity. Its<br />
components are titled “God Loves <strong>the</strong> Dreams of Serbian Artists”,<br />
“Celebrities”, “Hometown Boys” and “Pioneers”. The first<br />
component, “God Loves <strong>the</strong> Dreams of Serbian Artists”, includes<br />
photographic images of <strong>the</strong> author, posing with <strong>the</strong> world’s most<br />
popular football players of <strong>the</strong> moment, as a form of new icon.<br />
The second component, “Celebrities”, features <strong>the</strong> image of <strong>the</strong><br />
author surrounded by famous artists, movie stars, sportsmen,<br />
publishers, politicians or <strong>the</strong>ir wives, cartoonists, avant-garde<br />
rock’n roll stars, and o<strong>the</strong>r public personalities who usually appear<br />
on <strong>the</strong> cover of lifestyle magazines. The third component,<br />
“Hometown Boys”, is conceived as <strong>the</strong> simulacrum of <strong>the</strong> First<br />
Serbian Porn, Art & Society magazine, consisting solely of frontpages<br />
announcing its non-existent content on issues related to<br />
sociology, art and <strong>the</strong>ory, and hardcore pornography. Finally,<br />
<strong>the</strong> fourth segment, “Pioneers”, is made as a set of portraits of<br />
internationally well-known artists and art-related professionals<br />
originating from <strong>the</strong> region of former Eastern Europe, such as<br />
Oleg Kulik, Zbygnew Libera, Lorand Hegyi, Yuri Leiderman, or<br />
Luchezar Boyadjiev, proudly wearing a red pioneer scarf, in <strong>the</strong><br />
glorious posture taken from <strong>the</strong> iconography of socialist realism.<br />
Its mission being <strong>the</strong> identification of <strong>the</strong> role of <strong>the</strong> missing<br />
(critical) cultural agent of incomplete popular tasks, <strong>the</strong> Populist<br />
Project begins by staging an imaginary place meant to host <strong>the</strong><br />
agent in absence. Considering that being successful in sport and<br />
music, or at least in street hustling and semi-legal trades, are<br />
<strong>the</strong> major contemporary tools available for <strong>the</strong> members of a<br />
certain underprivileged community for trespassing social hierarchies<br />
and inscribing <strong>the</strong>m into <strong>the</strong> wider representational filed,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Populist Project has staged <strong>the</strong> place for <strong>the</strong> cultural agent<br />
of incomplete popular tasks by opening <strong>the</strong> gallery of images<br />
representing success of a formerly described kind for interfacing<br />
with articulated social thought and critical cultural efforts. In<br />
that respect, <strong>the</strong> role of <strong>the</strong> organic intellectual, as <strong>the</strong> genuine<br />
and au<strong>the</strong>ntic representative of a certain underprivileged social<br />
group, fighting on behalf of it in <strong>the</strong> wider social and cultural<br />
sphere, to which o<strong>the</strong>r members do not have any access, is being<br />
replaced by <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>tic intellectual. As a hybrid form of inbetween<br />
nature, with different types of belonging and affiliations,<br />
it creates a link between <strong>the</strong> different groups engaged in <strong>the</strong><br />
popular struggle against <strong>the</strong> hegemony of <strong>the</strong> current system,<br />
and transforms <strong>the</strong>ir position of responsibility with respect to <strong>the</strong><br />
underprivileged into a locus of universalizing effects, and into a<br />
valid starting point for legitimate future social change.”<br />
