o For packages weighing up to 20 lbs. the outer package minimum<br />

requirements will be a 200 lb. Bursting test or 32 Edge Crush Test<br />

package.<br />

o For packages weighing 21-50 lbs. a 250 lb. Bursting test or 44 Edge<br />

Crush Test will be required.<br />

o For packages weighing 51-70 lbs. the outer container must be 275 lb.<br />

or 55 Edge Crush Test.<br />

• Full partitions between the inner containers <strong>and</strong> box sides.<br />

• Fiberboard padding above <strong>and</strong> below the inner containers.<br />

• A retaining ring around the lid or:<br />

o For gallons 6 lid clips<br />

o For quarts 5 lid clips<br />

o For pints 4 lid clips<br />

• Absorbent material is required to fill the void spaces.<br />

Radioactive Shipments<br />

Radioactive material: FedEx Ground will only accept radioactive material, Type<br />

A quantity, in packaging required to be labeled RADIOACTIVE WHITE-I. FedEx<br />

Ground will not accept the RADIOACTIVE YELLOW II or YELLOW III hazard<br />

labels. If shipping a Radioactive material that requires the shipping paper (OP-<br />

900) <strong>and</strong> certification form (OP-950) the following information must appear in the<br />

“Type DOT Label(s) Required, Ltd. Qty., or Special Permit” section of both forms:<br />

• The name of each radionuclide, abbreviations are permitted.<br />

• The physical <strong>and</strong> chemical form.<br />

• The activity in becquerels, gigabecquerels or terabecquerels, abbreviations<br />

are permitted.<br />

• The name of the label: RADIOACTIVE WHITE-I<br />

• The words “Fissile Excepted” if packaged is excepted under 49 CFR 173.453.<br />

FedEx Fact: FedEx Ground does not accept Radioactive Fissile material unless<br />

properly prepared <strong>and</strong> packaged under exception 49 CFR 173.453.<br />

Radioactive material limited quantity (Ltd. Qty.): Radioactive materials in<br />

excepted packages for limited quantities do not require the RADIOACTIVE<br />

WHITE-I hazard label, hazardous material shipping paper (OP-900) or<br />

certification form (OP-950). Radioactive packages in limited quantities must<br />

conform to 49 CFR 173.421. The outside of the inner packaging or, if there is not<br />

inner packaging the outside of the package itself must have “Radioactive”<br />

marked on the package. The outside of each package must be marked with the<br />

four digit UN identification number for the material preceded by the letter UN.<br />

Note: Radioactive material meeting the definition of another hazard class or<br />

division cannot be transported or prepared under the limited quantity exceptions.<br />
