currently the only one to <strong>in</strong>clude ano<strong>in</strong>tment of<br />

the bride <strong>and</strong> groom. This ano<strong>in</strong>tment can only be<br />

understood by compar<strong>in</strong>g it with the ano<strong>in</strong>tment<br />

of k<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> the Levis who were ano<strong>in</strong>ted before<br />

their crown<strong>in</strong>g. Crowns are made with the flowers<br />

of the season or with branches of laurel or olive<br />

trees or made of metal. Crowns are placed on<br />

the head either to mean someone is em<strong>in</strong>ent or<br />

consecrated or to mean he is victorious. John<br />

Chrysostom gives the crown <strong>in</strong> marriage another<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g: ‘The crown is placed on the head of the<br />

spouses as a sign of their victory. They head to the<br />

lust.’ Before the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the ceremony, the<br />

bride arrives to church with her father or guardian<br />
