Salat al-‘Idayn<br />
(Prayor of the two ‘Id)<br />
<br />
They used to be said outside mosques s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
great numbers of people would attend right after<br />
sunrise. They are now held <strong>in</strong> congregational<br />
rak’at,<br />
adhan (call for prayer) or<br />
iqamah (second call to prayer). In the first qiyam<br />
there are seven takbirat (Allah Akbar) <strong>and</strong> five<br />
<strong>in</strong> the second qiyam. In both rak’ah <br />
Open<strong>in</strong>g’ is recited publicly, followed by the Sura<br />
rak’a<br />
Overspread<strong>in</strong>g Pall’(88) <strong>in</strong> the second rak’a. This<br />
is followed by a khutba (sermon) by the Imam<br />
<br />
prayer is not obligatory (farida) as are the five<br />
daily prayers.<br />
Funeral Prayer<br />
or Salat al-Janaza<br />
The coff<strong>in</strong> of the deceased is placed <strong>in</strong> front of<br />
the pray<strong>in</strong>g people. The Imam st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong> front <strong>and</strong><br />
those who want to pray st<strong>and</strong> beh<strong>in</strong>d him. The<br />
prayer conta<strong>in</strong>s a du’a’ (<strong>in</strong>vocation) <strong>in</strong> the heart<br />
for the deceased <strong>and</strong> the rest of the people. In it<br />
are four Takbirat or five accord<strong>in</strong>g to the School of<br />
Jurisprudence (madhahb).<br />
Salat al-‘Istisqa’(for ra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g)<br />
Prayer for Ra<strong>in</strong> is said <strong>in</strong> times of drought <strong>and</strong><br />
dryness; people go out <strong>in</strong> the open <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vocate<br />
God (the Mighty <strong>and</strong> the Majestic) ask<strong>in</strong>g him for<br />
mercy <strong>and</strong> beseech<strong>in</strong>g Him for ra<strong>in</strong>.
