Salat al-Farida<br />

(Obligatory Prayer)<br />

Prayer for Muslims is a great bond between the<br />

Creator <strong>and</strong> the created, the Worshipped <strong>and</strong> the<br />

worshipper. Islam is not complete other than with<br />

prayer. It is one of the pillars of Islam <strong>in</strong> addition<br />

to fast<strong>in</strong>g, hajj (pilgrimage) <strong>and</strong> zakat (almsgiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to the poor), after the tw<strong>in</strong> declaration of faith <strong>in</strong><br />

Islam (shahada). For whoever preserves prayer, it<br />

will be for him light <strong>and</strong> guide <strong>and</strong> save him on<br />

the Day of Resurrection.<br />

Muslims are comm<strong>and</strong>ed to perform salat five<br />

times a day as specified by Muslim law: dawn<br />

prayer is two rak’at before sunrise; noon prayer<br />

is four rak’at; afternoon is four rak’at; (right after)<br />

sunset is three rak’ats; dusk, or even<strong>in</strong>g prayer,<br />

is four rak’at. A rak’ah starts by st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g. The<br />

Open<strong>in</strong>g Sura is read as well as one of the short<br />

Sura (publicly for even<strong>in</strong>g prayer <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> one’s<br />

heart <strong>in</strong> day prayers). Then the one pray<strong>in</strong>g kneels
