Hispanic Studies Students taking Spanish as a foreign language must take the following language modules depending on whether they have passed an A-Level or equivalent examination in Spanish. (In some cases, it may be appropriate for a student without A-Level to follow the post A- Level modules, but this should be discussed with the Spanish Language Coordinator.) Post A-Level or equivalent First Year HSP/176 Spanish I (core) HSP/141 Introduction to Hispanic Studies (compulsory) Second Year HSP/233 Spanish II (core) Final Year HSP/646 Spanish III (core) Ab initio (which may include GCSE level Spanish) First Year HSP/179 Introductory Spanish (core) HSP/141 Introduction to Hispanic Studies (compulsory) Second Year HSP/271 Spanish II Intensive* (core) Final Year HSP/646 Spanish III (core) *Only students who have obtained a C (50% or above) in Introductory Spanish will normally be allowed to register for Spanish II Intensive. Students for whom Spanish is their native language should consult their Adviser over the alternative requirements which apply. The classification of ‘native speaker’ normally implies that you have been educated to university entrance level in a Spanish-speaking country. The Department rules on all such classifications and its decision is final. All students must take the compulsory content module for Hispanic Studies, which is HSP/141 Introduction to Hispanic Studies (30 credits). In addition, Single Honours students must take HSP/101 Key Concepts for the Study of Latin American Cultural History. Post A-Level students take this in their first year and others take it in their second year. Single Honours students must also take one Catalan or Portuguese module, either language or culture, during the first year (this requirement does not apply to students of other programmes involving Hispanic Studies).
