Field
University eleven outplayed Loyola the rest
of the way on the wind-swept Ortmann Field,
but they were unable to overcome the victor's
lead. This game marked the turning point of
the season, for the Bees never were able to
recover their early season form. An easy 6-1
victory over Towson followed, but Salisbury
and Western Maryland triumphed 2-1 and 2-0,
respectively.
In the Mason-Dixon games played, the Bees
split even in four games. Their overall record
was a big improvement over their .333 percentage
recorded in 1947.
Offensi ve leader for the second season in a
row was Senior Karl Berend. Playing at
Center-Forward, Berend was the chief playmaker
and scorer. His best performance came
in the Towson game when he tallied five goals.
Other standouts on the line were Walt Nawrocki,
Mike D'Ambrosio, Frank Bellusci, and
Freshman Bill Beck.
Elected captain by his teammates for the
second year was rugged Russ Deppish. Although
bothered during the entire season by a
thigh injury, Deppish was outstanding at his
Fullback position. Vern Mummert, Jim Kardash,
Rommy Dashner, and Jim Peterka were
bulwarks on the defense, while Goalie Don
Buttermore performed his net-minding duties
in a brilliant fashion.
