Services include mentoring programs, counseling and information on scholarships for minorities and assistance in transfer procedures to four-year colleges and universities. Advising and Transfer Services Center The advising and Transfer Services Center provides information for students who are interested in pursuing a baccalaureate degree after leaving Malcolm X College. Students have access to catalogs, applications and course equivalency listings to help facilitate their transition to a four year institution. Through the services offered, students receive one on one advisement from college representatives, visit college campuses and obtain scholarship and admission information. The Center has resource materials to assist students in selecting the appropriate institution. Staff members follow-up on Transfer Center users, keeping them abreast of application deadlines, college representative visits, Open Houses and scholarship opportunities and their progress toward meeting admission criteria to the senior institution of their choice. Effective September 1993, the Malcolm X College Transfer Center is implementing a Transfer Guarantee Program that will include automatic admissions and applicability of courses taken at Malcolm X College that will be applied directly towards completing baccalaureate degree requirements at public and private universities. Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program Pursuant to Title IV of the Higher Education Act, as amended and effective July I, 1987, Malcolm X College will maintain a drug abuse prevention program. This program provides for the referral of students, faculty and staff to the following community agencies offering drug prevention treatment programs. For more information, contact the Human Resources Department. Special Needs Special needs students are those individuals, who are disabled, disadvantaged and/or limited English proficient. The objective is to provide support services that offset functional limitations created by special needs. Among the services available to students with disabilities are support personnel such as note takers, exam aides and interpreters. Adaptive equipment is available in the Academic Support Center. Services provided to students who are disadvantaged and/or limited-English proficient include referrals, information regarding campus and community 24
esources, and career assessment upon request. For further information, contact the Special Needs Coordinator. Child Development Lab Center The Malcolm X College Child Development lab Center is located at the southwest end of the campus in facilities designed especially for pre-school children. The Center comprises three well-equipped classrooms and a unique, rooftop playground. The Child Development Lab Center has been established to provide childcare services for the children of parents who are enrolled in the college, employed by the college, or employed outside of the college. The environment is child-centered and equipped with interest centers that foster independence, build self-esteem and help children to develop various skills as they play. The cost to enroll a child is based on a sliding fee scale. Further information can be obtained from the Center Director at 850-7177 or 850- 7178. Program: Activities: Ages: 2 to 5 years Creative Arts Days: Monday-Friday Language Arts Music/Movement Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Math & Science Concepts Gross & Small Muscle Activities Water Play & Field Trips Evening Student Services Most Malcolm X College offices and services maintain evening hours during the Spring and Fall semesters until 7:00p.m. Monday through Thursday to accommodate students. Services available during the evening include Admissions Office, Financial Aid, Counseling, Academic Support Services, Transfer Center, Library Facilities, Computer Laboratories. Hours vary from one office to another. Consult posted office hours or call the College for more specific information. In addition, an evening administrator is on duty to handle problems or emergency situations Monday through Thursday. Books and Supplies The Bookstore is located on the main floor at the east end of the building. Textbooks for courses at Malcolm X College, as well as supplies, are available. Check with the Bookstore manager for current semester business hours. All required course texts must be available to students for purchase in the 25
