Marjut, Johansson is Professor at the Department of French Studies, University of<br />

Turku, Finland. Her research interests lie in the areas of pragmatics, interaction<br />

analysis and sociolinguistics as well as <strong>for</strong>eign language teaching and learning at the<br />

university level. She has been working on different genres of mediated interaction; on<br />

political media interviews and most recently on computer-mediated communication.<br />

She is also interested in multilingualism, in language policies and practices in the<br />

<strong>European</strong> Union and in ideologies and attitudes concerning languages.<br />

Martyniuk, Waldemar was appointed as the new ECML Executive Director in October<br />

2008, replacing the previous Director, Adrian Butler. He was <strong>for</strong>merly Assistant<br />

Professor of Applied Linguistics at the <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> Polish Language and Culture of the<br />

Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Teacher trainer, author of textbooks,<br />

curricula and testing materials <strong>for</strong> Polish as a <strong>for</strong>eign language. Secretary of the State<br />

Certification Commission <strong>for</strong> Polish as a Foreign Language. Visiting professor and<br />

lecturer at universities in Germany (Bochum, Gießen, Göttingen, Mainz, Münster),<br />

Switzerland (Basel) and in the USA (Stan<strong>for</strong>d University). Director of the Jagiellonian<br />

University School of Polish Language and Culture (2001-2004). Translator of the<br />

Common <strong>European</strong> Framework of Reference <strong>for</strong> <strong>Languages</strong> into Polish (2003).<br />

Seconded to the Council of Europe’s Language Policy Division (2005-2006).<br />

Newby, David is Associate Professor of Language Teaching Research and<br />

Methodology at the University of Graz, Austria. He has worked on a number of<br />

projects <strong>for</strong> the ECML and is the co-ordinator of the <strong>European</strong> Portfolio <strong>for</strong> Student<br />

Teachers of <strong>Languages</strong>. He has also worked extensively <strong>for</strong> the British Council and<br />

Council of Europe as an in-service trainer and consultant in a variety of countries. His<br />

main field of interest is pedagogical grammar.<br />

O´Rourke, Bernadette is a lecturer in Applied Language and Sociolinguistics. Her<br />

research interests include minority language issues (with a particular interest in<br />

Galician and Irish), language policy and planning, language identity, multilingualism<br />

and intercultural communicative competence. She currently holds a Visiting Research<br />

Fellowship at the National University of Ireland, Galway.<br />

Penz, Hermine is Assistant Professor at the English Department of the University of<br />

Graz. Her main areas of research include: discourse analysis, pragmatics and<br />

sociolinguistics with a focus on “language and culture” and “language in the media”.<br />

Her current research focuses on using English as a lingua franca <strong>for</strong> intercultural<br />

communication at the ECML. She has participated in various ECML projects and<br />

served as a consultant <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Centre</strong>’s second medium-term programme.<br />
