APPENDIX A: HIGH PRIORITY PRE FIRE PROJECTS NEU Chipper Programs PRIORITY: 1 Description: All of the field projects identified in the NEU Fire Plan identify the need for a chipper. In NEU, the chipper programs provide support to homeowners that do the clearing around their structures as required by the Public Resources Code (PRC 4291). The Chippers are also utilized to reduce the material removed from fuel reduction projects throughout the Unit. Chipping programs, operating in a similar fashion have been in existence in Nevada, Placer and Yuba counties for several years. Coordinators oversee the chipping programs and manage the day-to-day operations. These programs are a result of cooperator collaboration and many funding sources working together to accomplish fuels reduction work where it is most beneficial and manageable. This project directly affects defensible space and will have the most effect in reducing structure damage or loss in wildfires. Status: Continuous program Cooperators: Placer County, Placer County Resource Conservation District, Placer Fire Alliance, North Tahoe Fire, Truckee Fire, Nevada County Fire Safe Council and Yuba County Fire Safe Council. Cost: $500,000 annually (financial models differ between counties) PRIORITY: 1 NEU Fire Prevention and Resource Management Projects Description: Throughout the Unit NEU staff will continue to develop and support projects designed to educate the public, enforce forest and fire laws, reduce fuels, improve vegetation health and protect high risk communities. These projects will be accomplished through the existing NEU fire prevention and resource management programs and through collaboration with our cooperators. NEU has among the most progressive resource management program in the state, continuing to integrate those programs with fire prevention and law enforcement will improve public service and strengthen program consistencies. NEU Pre Fire Planning PRIORTY: 2 Description: This project will focus on new and existing pre fire projects in the Unit and provide pre fire planning tools to identify, define and develop those projects. Project analysis and inventory will be incorporated into GIS for tracking and data management. Ultimately, data will become more readily available for use at the battalion and field levels and by our cooperators. Information will be included and updates annually in the Unit Fire plan. Status: Partially Complete Cooperators: Placer, Nevada, Yuba, Sierra and Sutter Counties Cost: $150,000 NEU Defensible Space Inspector Program PRIORITY: 2 Description: Throughout the Unit, grant funded inspectors will conduct residential defensible space inspections for compliance with PRC 4291. The program consists of two inspectors per county, vehicle and materials designed to educate the public on defensible space requirements. Information sis also provided on reducing equipment use fires and debris fire ignitions.
