It implies a cognizant effort to optimize and maintain the productivity of the land systems through integrated and optimal development of water, land, vegetation and livestock researchers and suggesting appropriate land use practices causing minimum environmental damage. 3.6.3 Rain Water harvesting (RWH) RWH is capturing and storing rainwater in ponds, lakes, open areas for agriculture purpose as well as domestic purpose. 3.6.4 Rain Water Harvesting Structures (RWHS) RWHS are the barriers or measures created or adopted to harvest the rainwater. Major RWHS under watershed approach are check dams, farm-ponds, nala bunding, contour bunds, vegetative barriers etc. 3.6.5 Farm ponds Farm ponds are small water harvesting structures used for collecting and storing runoff water. Farm ponds are constructed with varying size and may fulfil several farm needs such as supply of the water to crops for protective irrigation, fish production etc. 3.6.6 With farm-pond area The area where the farm-pond concept is adopted. 3.6.7 Without farm-pond area The area not only includes the area outside farm pond but also where the concept of farm pond is not at all adopted. 3.6.8 Sub-watershed (SWS) Area with 5000-7000 hectares. 3.6.9 Micro-watershed (MWS) Area with 500-700 hectares. 3.6.10 Cropping intensity It is the ratio of gross cropped area to the net sown area expressed in percentage. Gross cropped area Cropping intensity = —————————————— X 100 Net cropped area 3.6.11 Total income It is the sum of the earnings by the sample farmers in the household from all the sources i.e. farm and non-farm cases in case of beneficiary. 3.6.12 Total employment It is obtained by summing up the total days employed in a year by each person in a family. 3.6.13 Man-day Refers to eight hours work turned out by an adult male in a day. 3.6.14 Conversion factor Female workday to man equivalent day. The conversion ratio of two man equivalent days equal to three female workdays was used in the study to compute total employment per farm in man equivalent days.
3.6.15 Seed Farm produced seed has been valued at the village prices prevalent at the time of sowing and purchased seeds have been considered at actual rates paid by the sample farmers. 3.6.16 Farm yard manure Farm yard manure was valued at the village prices prevalent at the time of sowing and farm yard manure purchased was valued at actual rates paid by the sample farmers. 3.6.17 Farm business income The difference between the gross income and Cost-A, that is, profit at Cost A represented the Farm business income of cultivators. 3.6.18 Family labour income The profit at Cost-B, that is, the difference between the gross income and Cost B represented the income of the cultivators on account of his own and family labour. 3.6.19 Net income The profit at Cost-C, that is, the difference between gross income and Cost-C represented the net income of the farm enterprise.
