Paths, access and car parking also appear in the upper to middle scale.<br />
Playgrounds and adventurous play areas for children also rate highly.<br />
Needless to say, these attributes are rated as being essential by parents with<br />
young children.<br />
In general, more specialist activit<strong>ie</strong>s including kayaking, cultural events,<br />
music events, watersports and angling, are all given lower average values.<br />
However, this is rather a reflection of the fact that most respondents would<br />
not engage directly in these activit<strong>ie</strong>s. The average ratings are still in the<br />
range of being regarded as “somewhat important” rather than undesirable.<br />

Respondents were invited to make comments. The most common<br />
responses related to the need for good security (18 comments) and good<br />
maintenance (14). Reference was often made to drinking and other<br />
instances of anti-social behaviour. Several respondents repl<strong>ie</strong>d on the need<br />
for playgrounds (9) and on designated areas to walk the dog (8). Most of<br />
the latter comments were by dog owners rather than by people enraged by<br />
loose dogs or dog mess. Other calls were made for car parking,<br />
development control, cycle facilit<strong>ie</strong>s and naturalness.<br />

The greatest variation in ratings appl<strong>ie</strong>s to cafes/tea rooms,<br />
tennis/basketball/ bowling, management as a single park, and surfaced<br />
paths. The first of these is probably regarded as unnecessary by some<br />
respondents while, for others, it may reflect a perceived association with<br />
