Policy No Nature of Policy Appraisal Consistent<br />

OBJECTIVE<br />

RO2<br />

In respect of the proposed Special Amenity Area Order for the <strong>Liffey</strong> <strong>Valley</strong><br />

(Policy H44, Chapter 10), Dublin City Council shall pursue the following<br />

objectives:<br />

• To develop lands adjoining Islandbridge House and the river <strong>Liffey</strong> for passive<br />

recreational use<br />

• To provide for a footpath along the north bank of the river <strong>Liffey</strong> from<br />

Islandbridge to Chapelizod<br />

• To investigate the feasibility of providing a footbridge across the river <strong>Liffey</strong> to<br />

allow for the development of a pedestrian route linking <strong>Liffey</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Park and<br />

the War Memorial Gardens with the Phoenix Park<br />

• To retain areas of semi-wilderness along the bank of the river <strong>Liffey</strong> to allow<br />

for the survival of flora and fauna and the maintenance of wildlife habitats<br />

• To investigate the feasibility of altering the existing weir on the river <strong>Liffey</strong> at<br />

Islandbridge in order to improve access to the city centre section of the river by<br />

the rowing community<br />

• To carry out a feasibility study to examine the issues involved in constructing a<br />

barrage on the river <strong>Liffey</strong> including the maintenance of water levels to facilitate<br />

river based transport, the protection of all flora/fauna habitats and other<br />

ecological factors<br />

H45 It is policy of Dublin City Council to protect the special character of Landscape<br />

Conservation Areas.<br />

H46 It is the policy of Dublin City Council to protect the unique natural amenit<strong>ie</strong>s of<br />

all rivers within and forming boundar<strong>ie</strong>s to the administrative area of Dublin<br />

City Council and to establish River Basin Management Plans, in co-operation<br />

with other relevant authorit<strong>ie</strong>s.<br />

RO1 It is the policy of Dublin City Council to continue to manage and protect public<br />

open spaces to meet the social, recreational, conservational and ecological needs<br />

of the city, and to consider the development of appropriate complementary<br />

facilit<strong>ie</strong>s, which do not detract from the amenit<strong>ie</strong>s of spaces. In this context<br />

Dublin City Council will seek to provide toilets/changing room facilit<strong>ie</strong>s as<br />

appropriate in all public parks under its control. Industrial developments of any<br />

kind will not be permitted in city parks and amenity open spaces and any<br />

complementary facilit<strong>ie</strong>s will require prior specific planning permission.<br />

assist in pursuing these objectives.<br />
