“For a fee, a leipzig gallery offers its exhibition<br />

space to private initiatives—i.e., collectors, busi-<br />

nesses, or commercial galleries. they may do<br />

with it whatever they will.” roughly, this is the<br />

scheme—no doubt abbreviated intentionally by<br />

journalists—behind Carte blanche (Cb), a two-<br />

year research project by the galerie für Zeit-<br />

genössische kunst (2008–10). the participating<br />

private collectors and businesses not only took<br />

on the costs of the exhibition, but also a share in the overall project<br />

budget for operating costs, attendants, publicity work, communication,<br />

etc. the artistic ideas and the objectives of the sponsors were<br />

presented for public discussion.<br />

this book analyses the contributions made by private initiatives and<br />

places them in a wider context of art theory dating back to the 19th<br />

century. reflections on the changing relations of art and commerce,<br />

on museum history, or shifts in the balance of public and private form<br />

the framework into which Cb, an often provocative project, is embedded.<br />

Utopian models of society have not been rated so high-<br />

ly since the late 1970s/early 1980s. However, social pi-<br />

lot projects have disappeared with them, projects that<br />

aimed to make culture and recreation more widely available. expan-<br />

sively laid out parks and swimming pools were the expression of a<br />

desire for participation in public life and prosperity for everyone. today,<br />

only a few of these locations and facilities are still intact; most<br />

of them have fallen into decay.<br />

isabella Hollauf starts her work with the disappearance of past social<br />

utopias. Her interest is directed not only towards post-communist<br />

countries, but also towards those with strong socialist tendencies<br />

for many decades, such as austria or Sweden. in a photographic<br />

search for evidence, she retraces the manifest changes in values, revealing<br />

former utopian pretensions and the often dismal reality of<br />

today. the book shows projects dating from 2001 to 2007.<br />
