Then an idea formed in her head. Instead <strong>of</strong> approaching the<br />

main entry, she approached the side salon, where a host <strong>of</strong> people<br />

were buying mineral water and chatting. She approached the<br />

locked glass door and tapped, waving hello. She appeared to be a<br />

lazy audience-member who did not want to walk all the way back<br />

to the main entrance.<br />

Sure enough, a woman opened the door for her, and they<br />

chatted gaily for a moment about the dramatic scene with<br />

Rigoletto and Gilda.<br />

“I thought I would die,” Audrey assured her. “Oh,” the other<br />

woman replied, “I know exactly what you're saying.”<br />

Now to enter the main hall. Here the problem was ushers,<br />

who were placed at every entryway, examining tickets and<br />

scouting for faces they had not seen before.<br />

A stout, stubby woman in a mustard-colored jacket spied<br />

Audrey and gave her a look. Audrey circled the theater and<br />

entered at a doorway where people were crowding through,<br />

disappearing in their number.<br />

She glanced about her at the hall. The magnificent chandelier<br />

above, with thousands <strong>of</strong> lights, illuminated hundreds <strong>of</strong> empty<br />

seats – but which ones were truly empty, and which ones were<br />

about to be filled? She must decide now before the lights went<br />

down.<br />

So she strode boldly down to the first section, and looked<br />

about for a co-conspirator, someone who looked like they would<br />
