India. Paris: UNESCO IIEP, 1991. 47 p. (IIEP research and studies programme: increasing and
improving the quality of basic education monograph no. 5) English.
Strategies to improve the quality of basic education services cannot be properly designed, monitored
and evaluated without an appropriate information system. This monograph reviews the main
weaknesses of the database on primary schooling in India and examines the major initiatives that have
been taken in recent years to modernize the educational management information system. Some of
these are bold and innovative and not likely to provide instant answers, but taken all together, they
reveal the design of the system for the future.
