Experience Sønderborg on your
own by the help of the leaflet about
the ‘heart path,’ that is available from
the tourist office. The 5 km long path
in the heart of Sønderborg town
leads through parks and neighbourhoods
from different periods and
past sculptures in many styles.
Dybbøl Mill at the Dybbøl Entrenchments
became a symbol of Danish
bravery in the war of 1864. You can
read more about the Battle at Dybbøl
and the year 1864 on p. 22-23.
In Ulkebøl Church there is a ’Dannebrog’
(the Danish flag) that ‘defended’
Danishness when the Prussians
conquered the island Als in 1864. The
pastor would not obey an order to
take down the flag, so the soldiers
shot at it and stepped on it. The pastor
moved to Zealand and took the
flag with him. After the Reunification
in 1920 the flag was brought back to
the church, where it can still be seen.
If you like shopping, there is ample
opportunity for this in the many
shops in town. Enjoy a walk in the
pleasant pedestrian street and have
a well-deserved break in one of the

On the fringe of town is Center Øst
with all its special shops and everyday
grocery shops.
In October 2013 the new shopping
mall ’Borgen’ opens in the center
of the town. The mall has up to 70
shops.
