The catch of cod in the area south of Rødsand was amount to between 1 /8 and 1 /5 of the
total data from logbook records for area 38G1 (Figure 4.2.6). The catches of flounder,
plaice and dab in the area amount to just a small part of the catch in area 38G1 (figure
4.2.7).
The interviews did not provide information about catches of herring, whiting and
brisling at Rødsand (see figures 4.2.6 and 4.2.7).
There are no records for silver eel in these logbooks (figure 4.2.7), as the fishermen who
catch silver eel around Rødsand sail under coastal waters regulations. This means that
data from these fishermen is not included in the logbook data for area 38G1.
Vessels of less than 10 metres, or of under 12 metres but with trips of less than 24
hours, or vessels that for other reasons are exempted from the Ministry of Agriculture
and Fisheries and also sail under coastal waters regulations are exempted under
Statutory Order no. 91 from the obligation to complete logbooks (appendix 9.8.)
There can also be uncertainty in recording the fish on a landing as being from a single
area, as the fishermen fish several areas within the same day.
As discussed earlier, it is only the fishermen themselves who are able to assess how
large a part of their catch originates from Rødsand. The accuracy of their assessment
inevitably depends on their memories.
An interview survey from Øresund (Danish Institute for Fisheries Research, 1994)
suggested that general problems with the official fishery statistics are:
