95/46/EC harmonises <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Data. Directive 97/66/EC particularises <strong>the</strong><br />
provisions <strong>of</strong> this Directive <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
telecommunications sector. Both Directives<br />
apply to process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> personal data on <strong>the</strong><br />
Internet. A basic data protection pr<strong>in</strong>ciple (see<br />
Articles 6(1)(c) and 7 <strong>of</strong> directive 95/46/EC) is<br />
that <strong>the</strong> personal data collected <strong>in</strong> any<br />
situation should be limited to that which is<br />
necessary and relevant to <strong>the</strong> purpose, for<br />
example connect<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Internet and us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> services provided over it. Directive<br />
97/66/EC specifies this with particular regard<br />
to traffic data by prohibit<strong>in</strong>g storage longer<br />
than necessary for bill<strong>in</strong>g purposes. The<br />
consequence is that, after erasure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
data, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual is aga<strong>in</strong> anonymous. In<br />
addition, Article 5 <strong>of</strong> this Directive obliges<br />
