Students play an important role in on-going research projects, many of which are
collaborations with Dartmouth Medical School (DMS), Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical
Center (DHMC), Tuck School of Business, and the Graduate Arts and Sciences, as well
as partners from industry and government.
Research projects typically crosscut traditional engineering disciplines, addressing
critical human needs in three broad focus areas:
■ Engineering in Medicine
■ Energy Technologies
■ Complex Systems
Researchers draw on expertise from multiple disciplines, including biomedical, chemical
and biochemical, electrical, computer, environmental, materials, and mechanical
systems engineering, and engineering physics.
ENGINEERING IN MEDICINE
Students work with Thayer School and Dartmouth Medical School researchers as well
as clinicians from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center to develop and test technological
innovations.
Biomedical, chemical, and biochemical engineering research includes:
■ Protein engineering
■ Cancer biotherapeutics
■ Diagnostic imaging
■ Image reconstruction techniques
■ Therapy monitoring
Electrical and computer engineering and engineering physics projects include:
■ Biologically-inspired cochlear implants
■ Genome sequencing
■ Electromagnetic energy therapeutics
■ Electrical impedance spectroscopy
■ Microwave imaging techniques
Materials and mechanical systems engineering research includes:
■ Therapeutic hyperthermia
■ Iron nanoparticles for cancer treatment
■ Joint replacement technology
■ Magnetic resonance elastography
■ Neurovascular coupling modeling
