Definitions<br />

ACADEMIC COURSE - Those high school (grades 9-<br />

12) courses that:<br />

A. Can be credited to meet minimum<br />

requirements for graduation<br />

B. Are taught by a teacher required to have state<br />

licensure in the course<br />

C. Have a course content guide approved by the<br />

<strong>Arkansas</strong> Department of Education<br />

D. Have class time scheduled<br />

ATTENDANCE AREA - The boundaries of a school<br />

district when only one public high school is contained<br />

therein, or the boundaries of a school attendance<br />

zone/area as established by the local board when<br />

more than one public school is in the district.<br />

AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE - An official<br />

voting representative of the <strong>AAA</strong> member school.<br />

CAMP - A site where three or more students or<br />

school teams meet for the purpose of receiving<br />

instruction in basic skills in a sport. Football camps<br />

may be held only between the final day of the spring<br />

term (May-June) and beginning of fall football practice<br />

(Week #5).<br />

NOTE: A violation of the Summer Camp Rule or the All-<br />

Star Rule may cause the student to lose eligibility for up<br />

to one year.<br />

CLASSIC – An event conducted with predetermined<br />

pairings and no elimination process. This may be<br />

played ONLY during a holiday period.<br />

COMPETITION - Students from two or more schools<br />

competing for the purpose of receiving an award,<br />

rating, recognition, criticism or qualification for<br />

additional competition.<br />

NOTE: Eligibility rules apply to all students competing<br />

in athletic or non-athletic activities.<br />

CORE CURRICULUM - Refers to 7th and 8th grade<br />

classes in math, science, English, and social studies.<br />

DE NOVO - Heard anew. Where a decision by the<br />

Executive Director is appealed “de novo” to the Board<br />

of Directors, the Board of Directors is not in any way<br />

bound, restricted, or limited by the findings or<br />

conclusions of the Executive Director and may render<br />

whatever decision it deems appropriate based on its<br />

own review of the facts and circumstances.<br />

DOMICILE - The place at which a person is<br />

physically present and that the person regards as<br />

home; a person’s true, fixed, principal, and<br />

permanent home.<br />

FIELD TRIP - Individual students or groups of<br />

students invited to programs or events when there is<br />

no competition and the students are not interacting<br />

with each other for the purpose of planning,<br />

qualifying, or arranging for future programs or for the<br />

purpose of receiving recognition. Schools may<br />

provide transportation.<br />

INTERSCHOLASTIC - Events involving interaction<br />

between students from two or more schools.<br />

INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES - Athletic/nonathletic/academic<br />

activities in which middle/junior high<br />

or senior high (7-12) school students compete on a<br />

school vs. school basis. Performance activities such<br />

as band, speech, drama, etc. may be viewed as<br />

competitive arenas both internally (ratings by<br />

individual schools) and externally (comparisons of<br />

individual or school ratings with a view toward<br />

determining an ultimate winner).<br />

INVITATIONAL - Any activity which is not an official<br />

activity or subdivision of an official activity.<br />

MIDDLE SCHOOL TOURNAMENT - In team sports,<br />

middle schools that have a separate <strong>AAA</strong><br />

membership may play in one tournament that does<br />

not count against the total number allowable for a<br />

junior high. No middle school athlete may compete in<br />

more than three total tournaments including junior<br />

high and middle school.<br />

OFFICIAL ACTIVITY - Any interscholastic activity<br />

which the <strong>AAA</strong> sponsors or interscholastic activity on<br />

the state level by an official <strong>AAA</strong> recognized club or<br />

organization in which the students receive benefits<br />

based on the goals and objectives of the club or<br />

organization.<br />

OFFICIAL INTERPRETATIONS - The only official<br />

interpretations are written responses to written<br />

requests. If there is a question concerning the<br />

eligibility of a participant in any interscholastic activity,<br />

the Executive Director should be contacted in writing<br />

for an official interpretation of the rule in question.<br />

PARTICIPATION - Students from two or more<br />

schools meeting and interacting in predetermined<br />

programs concerning a specific club or organization.<br />

Students combining or interacting for a performance<br />

for a particular group with the purpose of entertaining<br />

or educating when there is no competition involved.<br />

PRACTICE - An activity involving the players of only<br />

one <strong>AAA</strong> member school.
