a. Statement <strong>of</strong> significance<br />

“<strong>Falun</strong> M<strong>in</strong>e deserves <strong>in</strong>deed to be called <strong>the</strong> eighth wonder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, for as<br />

regards <strong>the</strong> difficulty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work and <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>s and expense which it demands, <strong>the</strong><br />

age, renown and importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e, it not only equals but surpasses all <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs (…) He who has not seen <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> has not seen Sweden..”<br />

Thus <strong>the</strong> map-eng<strong>in</strong>eer (markscheider) Ol<strong>of</strong> Naucler wrote <strong>in</strong> a dissertation about <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> 1702. Innumerable are <strong>the</strong> travellers, pr<strong>in</strong>ces,<br />

ambassadors and k<strong>in</strong>gs who have visited at <strong>Falun</strong> and been fasc<strong>in</strong>ated and terrified<br />

by <strong>the</strong> vast depths <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> dark, constricted work<strong>in</strong>g spaces, <strong>the</strong> shafts and<br />

galleries below ground and <strong>the</strong> appall<strong>in</strong>g furnace smoke by which <strong>Falun</strong> and its<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>gs were perpetually wrea<strong>the</strong>d <strong>in</strong> sulphurous fumes <strong>of</strong> almost asphyxiat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

density. Build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> were blackened and all vegetation<br />

was suffocated. Round about <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>es and copper furnaces, <strong>the</strong> ground was laid<br />

bare and completely sterile. The black slag landscape presented nei<strong>the</strong>r moss, lichen,<br />

grass, shrubs nor trees with<strong>in</strong> a radius <strong>of</strong> 2.5 km from <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> (<strong>in</strong> swedish "Stora Kopparberget") at <strong>Falun</strong> is <strong>the</strong> oldest<br />

and most important m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g enterprise <strong>in</strong> Sweden. Its oldest surviv<strong>in</strong>g document dates<br />

from 1288 and <strong>the</strong> oldest surviv<strong>in</strong>g charter from 1347. Scientific analyses suggest<br />

that <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e goes back even fur<strong>the</strong>r, to <strong>the</strong> eighth or n<strong>in</strong>th century<br />

A.D.<br />

Round about <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> medieval times was created a unique<br />

man-made landscape and a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive cultural region known as Kopparbergslagen.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 16th and 17th centuries <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> was <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stay <strong>of</strong><br />

Sweden’s economy, enabl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> country to become one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g states <strong>of</strong><br />

Europe. In <strong>the</strong> mid-17th century, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> was provid<strong>in</strong>g twothirds<br />

<strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> world’s copper output. In <strong>the</strong> mid-17th century, <strong>the</strong> government <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> realm declared: “This k<strong>in</strong>gdom stands or falls by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong>!”<br />

<strong>Copper</strong> from <strong>Falun</strong> was exported all over <strong>the</strong> world and provided sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g copper<br />

ro<strong>of</strong>s for palaces like Versailles <strong>in</strong> Paris and for churches and manor houses <strong>in</strong><br />

Sweden and Europe. Spa<strong>in</strong> adopted a copper co<strong>in</strong>age standard and used co<strong>in</strong>s struck<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> copper. In Sweden, m<strong>in</strong>ts were established at Säter <strong>in</strong> 1624 and at Avesta <strong>in</strong><br />

1644. The Swedish 10-daler piece, weigh<strong>in</strong>g about 20 kg, is regarded as <strong>the</strong> largest<br />

sheet metal co<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> was organised as a corporative operation, with yeomen<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ers (bergsmän) own<strong>in</strong>g shares (known as fjärdeparter) proportional to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

hold<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> copper furnaces or shares <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same. The 1347 charter dealt among<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs with ore extraction, settlement and trade with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. The<br />

organisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e was an early precursor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t stock companies <strong>of</strong> later<br />

ages, and it is <strong>of</strong>ten referred to as “<strong>the</strong> oldest company <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world”.<br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> and its Cultural Landscape <strong>in</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> has a unique,<br />

outstand<strong>in</strong>gly rich <strong>in</strong>dustrial history, with excellent documentation, collections,<br />
