3. Description<br />

a. Description <strong>of</strong> property<br />

General: The property proposed for <strong>in</strong>scription consists <strong>of</strong> five areas surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> which toge<strong>the</strong>r made up Kopparbergslagen, a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive<br />

cultural region with a unique man-made landscape. They comprise <strong>the</strong> thousandyear-old<br />

m<strong>in</strong>e at <strong>Falun</strong> with facilities both below and above ground, furnace sites<br />

near <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e and waterways, ponds and canals and antiquated m<strong>in</strong>er-yeomen<br />

settlement west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e. To this has been added <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong>, with its<br />

gridiron street plan from 1646, <strong>the</strong> timber-built districts <strong>of</strong> Elsborg, Gamla<br />

Herrgården (“Old Manor House”) and Östanfors, and o<strong>the</strong>r listed build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong>. There are also four m<strong>in</strong>er-yeomen landscapes <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest: <strong>the</strong> area<br />

north <strong>of</strong> Lake Varpan, between Österå and Bergsgården, <strong>the</strong> area surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Hosjön, <strong>the</strong> area along <strong>the</strong> Sundbornsån Valley and <strong>the</strong> area surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Knivaån<br />

Valley from Staberg towards Marieberg. The landscape is traversed by many old<br />

pack-horse trails and paths. The best-preserved <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se, classed as a site <strong>of</strong> national<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest, is called L<strong>in</strong>névägen and was <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> rid<strong>in</strong>g and cart<strong>in</strong>g route northwards<br />

from <strong>Falun</strong> <strong>in</strong> olden times.<br />

The core area<br />

A 1. The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong><br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> (<strong>in</strong> swedish "Stora Kopparberget") consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> immense Stora Stöten open-cast m<strong>in</strong>e which was formed by a<br />

landslip <strong>in</strong> 1687. This open pit is about 350 x 300 metres wide and about 90 m deep.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong>e has been excavated down to about 400 metres below ground, with<br />

numerous subterranean galleries and faces. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> older parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e are<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> visitors’ m<strong>in</strong>e open to <strong>the</strong> general public. The visitors’ m<strong>in</strong>e is<br />

between 55 and 65 metres below ground and has a visitors’ trail about 600 metres<br />

long. The attractions <strong>in</strong>clude Creutz’ s Shaft, 208 m deep and with a timber partition<br />

wall, “<strong>the</strong> highest timber structure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world”. The enormous Allmänna Freden<br />

(“Universal Peace”) workspace conta<strong>in</strong>s displays <strong>of</strong> historic work<strong>in</strong>g equipment and<br />

m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g methods, and <strong>the</strong> Julklappen (“Christmas Present”) rock cavern is <strong>in</strong>scribed<br />

with signatures commemorat<strong>in</strong>g royal visits to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g landscape above ground consists <strong>of</strong> spoil heaps and “Swedish red”<br />

heaps, toge<strong>the</strong>r with historic build<strong>in</strong>gs round about <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e, dat<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> 17th,<br />

18th and 19th centuries. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se build<strong>in</strong>gs have, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> customary manner,<br />

been moved about with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area, with <strong>the</strong> expansion <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operations. All <strong>the</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs described below are <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> M<strong>in</strong>e heritage site. Reference<br />

numbers correspond to those used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heritage site designation (see map, app. 1):<br />

3 Storage build<strong>in</strong>g - a build<strong>in</strong>g constructed <strong>of</strong> cast slag blocks, soon after <strong>the</strong> <strong>Falun</strong><br />

town fires <strong>of</strong> 1761, when M<strong>in</strong>e Super<strong>in</strong>tendent Anton von Swab, Markscheider<br />
