The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> is amply documented and depicted <strong>in</strong> art, literature and<br />

music. Ever s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> mid-17th century, <strong>the</strong> company has commissioned and<br />

collected portraits <strong>of</strong> em<strong>in</strong>ent yeomen-m<strong>in</strong>ers, representatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arts, and K<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and Queens <strong>of</strong> Sweden.<br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> has a well-managed archive conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g documents from<br />

1347 onwards.<br />

A museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial history has existed at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

1922.<br />

Part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old m<strong>in</strong>e work<strong>in</strong>gs has been a visitors’ m<strong>in</strong>e s<strong>in</strong>ce 1970.<br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> is an ancient and important tourist attraction, <strong>the</strong> oldest<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sweden. It has <strong>the</strong> first recorded mention <strong>in</strong> Sweden <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> word “tourist” (<strong>in</strong><br />

1824). It has received numerous <strong>in</strong>ternationally famous visitors. Evidence <strong>of</strong> this<br />

exists from 1615 onwards. As a tourist attraction and <strong>in</strong>dustrial monument, <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g landscape rates three stars <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> highly regarded Guide Michel<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> is listed as a historic build<strong>in</strong>g. The town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> is<br />

subject to detailed development plans under <strong>the</strong> Plann<strong>in</strong>g and Build<strong>in</strong>g Act (PBL),<br />

and parts <strong>of</strong> Kopparbergslagen are protected environments, listed as places <strong>of</strong><br />

national <strong>in</strong>terest by <strong>the</strong> Swedish heritage management authority and thus regarded as<br />

<strong>in</strong>dispensable parts <strong>of</strong> our national heritage.<br />

b. Possible comparative analysis<br />

The comparable places <strong>of</strong> world <strong>in</strong>terest known to us are <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g town <strong>of</strong> Röros<br />

<strong>in</strong> Norway and Rammelsberg m<strong>in</strong>e and <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Goslar <strong>in</strong> Germany.<br />

Röros, Norway, is a well-preserved wooden town with a copper m<strong>in</strong>e and copper<br />

smelt<strong>in</strong>g plant developed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 17th century. Ol<strong>of</strong>sgruvan (<strong>the</strong> Ol<strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>e) <strong>in</strong> Röros<br />

is open to visitors. Röros has been on <strong>the</strong> World Heritage List s<strong>in</strong>ce 1980. It is a<br />

much younger and smaller m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g-town than <strong>Falun</strong> and quite different <strong>in</strong> its<br />

character.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong>es at Rammelsberg have a thousand-year history. The rich ore deposits <strong>of</strong><br />

Rammelsberg made Goslar an important trad<strong>in</strong>g town. The oldest parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town<br />

are medieval and <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>gs date from between <strong>the</strong> 15th and 19th<br />

centuries. The Rammelsberg m<strong>in</strong>es and <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Goslar were listed as a site on<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>UNESCO</strong> World Heritage List <strong>in</strong> 1992.<br />

None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se, however, can rival <strong>the</strong> values possessed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong><br />

<strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> as an <strong>in</strong>dustrial monument and man-made landscape, by virtue <strong>of</strong><br />

its age, its history and its <strong>in</strong>ternational significance.<br />
