archives, museums and visitor activities. The <strong>Falun</strong> M<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> itself<br />
and parts <strong>of</strong> Kopparbergslagen are protected areas, listed as places <strong>of</strong> national<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest by Sweden’s heritage management authority.<br />
The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> leaves its impr<strong>in</strong>t on <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> and <strong>the</strong><br />
surround<strong>in</strong>g man-made landscape. Actual m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operations were discont<strong>in</strong>ued on<br />
8th December 1992, but <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> is a major tourist attraction,<br />
with a visitors’ m<strong>in</strong>e which receives about 60,000 visitors annually. Tens <strong>of</strong><br />
thousands more people - both tourists and local residents - come to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e for<br />
museum visits, conferences, heritage walks, festivities and o<strong>the</strong>r programmes. The<br />
man-made landscape surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e conta<strong>in</strong>s historic build<strong>in</strong>gs, slag heaps,<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> blast furnaces and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dustrial monuments. Beautiful manor houses,<br />
furnace sites and a remarkable agrarian landscape exists with<strong>in</strong> a 40 km h<strong>in</strong>terland<br />
surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e. The town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> has well-preserved timber build<strong>in</strong>gs from<br />
<strong>the</strong> 15th and subsequent centuries, as well as many o<strong>the</strong>r beautiful 17th and 18th<br />
century build<strong>in</strong>gs. The wooden town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pilot projects dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
European Architectural Heritage Year, 1975.<br />

The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest and most important m<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> mid-17th century, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> provided two-thirds <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
world’s copper output. It was <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stay <strong>of</strong> Sweden’s economy and made Sweden<br />
one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g states <strong>of</strong> Europe.<br />
The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> is surrounded by a unique cultural region called<br />
Kopparbergslagen. The surround<strong>in</strong>gs are dom<strong>in</strong>ated by remarkable and beautiful<br />
manor houses, blast furnace sites and a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive agrarian landscape.<br />
The town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> near <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes a unique urban<br />
settlement. The wooden town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biggest <strong>in</strong> Sweden and was a<br />

Kopparbergslagen has <strong>in</strong>numerable <strong>in</strong>dustrial rema<strong>in</strong>s and monuments.<br />
Adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> are <strong>the</strong> oldest dam lakes, canals and dikes <strong>in</strong><br />
Sweden.<br />
The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> has been a lead<strong>in</strong>g centre <strong>of</strong> technical development <strong>in</strong><br />
Sweden. Many famous Swedish scientists, technologists, eng<strong>in</strong>eers and metallurgists<br />
worked at <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Classical Swedish products have been created at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> and<br />
named after <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> - <strong>Falun</strong> sausage, <strong>Falun</strong> red pa<strong>in</strong>t (“Swedish<br />
red”), <strong>Falun</strong> v<strong>in</strong>egar, <strong>Falun</strong> schnapps and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> Maiden (a wooden doll).<br />
The <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> has engendered many Swedish <strong>in</strong>dustrial enterprises,<br />
such as Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB (STORA), <strong>the</strong> Kvarnsveden paper mill, <strong>the</strong><br />
