c. Au<strong>the</strong>nticity/Integrity<br />
<strong>M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> and <strong>the</strong> many copper furnaces were <strong>the</strong> paramount activity <strong>in</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> and <strong>the</strong><br />
surround<strong>in</strong>g countryside for centuries. These activities have left <strong>in</strong>numerable traces<br />
which are very palpably present <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> landscape and settlement. The m<strong>in</strong>e<br />
work<strong>in</strong>gs are <strong>in</strong>tact, complete with <strong>the</strong> enormous Stora Stöten open-cast m<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
galleries, shafts, a visitors’ m<strong>in</strong>e and also hoist<strong>in</strong>g gear, head frames, wheelhouses,<br />
w<strong>in</strong>ch houses, pivot and adm<strong>in</strong>istrative build<strong>in</strong>gs, dwell<strong>in</strong>g houses and ancillary<br />
facilities.<br />
The immediate vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong>cludes enormous slag heaps with <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> copper<br />
blast furnaces, (cold roast<strong>in</strong>g furnaces and roast<strong>in</strong>g-houses) and o<strong>the</strong>r monuments.<br />
The mounta<strong>in</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e have kilometres <strong>of</strong> canals toge<strong>the</strong>r with<br />
ponds, dam lakes and dam build<strong>in</strong>gs. The region round about has numerous blast<br />
furnace sites and many beautiful manor houses which survive toge<strong>the</strong>r with historic<br />
farmland and farm<strong>in</strong>g practices and historic road networks.<br />
All <strong>in</strong> all, Kopparbergslagen is a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive, unique man-made landscape with no<br />
counterpart <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. It's well preserved with many rema<strong>in</strong>s, sites and<br />
monuments and a very well preserved settlement with villages, farmsteds, build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
and <strong>the</strong> historic town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Falun</strong>.<br />
d. Criteria under which <strong>in</strong>scription is proposed<br />
In keep<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> Operational Guidel<strong>in</strong>es for <strong>the</strong> Implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World<br />
Heritage Convention, we wish to refer to criteria C 24 a IV and C 24 b II: The <strong>Great</strong><br />
<strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Falun</strong> and its cultural landscape are an outstand<strong>in</strong>g example <strong>of</strong> a<br />
technological ensemble with a historical <strong>in</strong>dustrial landscape and unique type <strong>of</strong><br />
build<strong>in</strong>gs and settlements. The properties have adequate legal and contractual and<br />
traditional protection and management mechanisms to ensure <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
nom<strong>in</strong>ated cultural properties and cultural landscapes and <strong>the</strong>ir accessibility to <strong>the</strong><br />
public.<br />
The <strong>Falun</strong> M<strong>in</strong>e, o<strong>the</strong>rwise known as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>Mounta<strong>in</strong></strong> (Stora<br />
Kopparberget), is <strong>the</strong> oldest and most important m<strong>in</strong>e work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Sweden and <strong>the</strong><br />
world, and <strong>of</strong> very great <strong>in</strong>ternational significance. It is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world’s most<br />
remarkable <strong>in</strong>dustrial monuments. The man-made landscape surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e is<br />
very remarkable and unique by Swedish and <strong>in</strong>ternational standards. The <strong>Falun</strong> M<strong>in</strong>e<br />
has developed and <strong>in</strong>fluenced <strong>in</strong>ternational m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g technology and played a very<br />
important part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world economy.<br />
