<strong>San</strong> <strong>Bernardino</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> Strategy<br />

approximately 500 acres per year (<strong>Land</strong>s 1 - Strategic Acquisition). The program will also<br />

emphasize retaining and restoring clear title to <strong>National</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> System land by resolving<br />

encroachment from adjacent private lands. Staff expect to survey approximately three to five<br />

miles of boundary annually to identify encroachment problems (<strong>Land</strong>s 3 - Boundary<br />

<strong>Management</strong>) with high priority given to recently burned areas and areas with substantial tree<br />

mortality and fuel buildup. Once identified, early resolution will be given to these<br />

encroachments.<br />

Special Area <strong>Management</strong><br />

The Special Area <strong>Management</strong> Program will emphasize managing for all existing,<br />

recommended, and new special designations to conserve those unique values and features for<br />

which the area is protected. Special designations include: wilderness, eligible wild and scenic<br />

rivers, research natural areas, and special interest areas.<br />

• SD 4 - Special Interest Areas<br />

The Heritage Resource Program has the mission to protect significant heritage resources, to share<br />

their values with the American people, and to contribute relevant information and perspectives to<br />

natural resource management so that future generations will have an opportunity to discover the<br />

human story etched in the national forest.<br />
