TALAVERA AND PALOMAREJO<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> Madrid was awarded<br />
a contract for the complete supply<br />
(design, manufacture, erection,<br />
and commission<strong>in</strong>g) of four Semikaplan<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>es with a runner diameter<br />
of 2.85 m by the Iberdrola group.<br />
Cienersa, a company belong<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />
Iberdrola group, and dedicated to<br />
renewable energies and m<strong>in</strong>ihydro, is<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g two new power stations, Talavera<br />
and Palomarejo, both located <strong>in</strong> a<br />
city 120 km away from Madrid. Iberdrola<br />
is a Global Key Account of VA TECH<br />
<strong>HYDRO</strong>, and the lead<strong>in</strong>g utility <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>stalled hydropower <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>. The<br />
permanent collaboration of VA TECH<br />
<strong>HYDRO</strong> <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> with Iberdrola and<br />
their daughter companies this time has<br />
PORTODEMOUROS<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> has signed<br />
a contract with a subsidiary company<br />
of Union Fenosa for the supply of the<br />
electromechanical equipment for the<br />
extension of Portodemouros plant.<br />
Energias Especiales, Union Fenosa´s<br />
daughter company, dedicated to the renewable<br />
energies bus<strong>in</strong>ess, decided to<br />
<strong>in</strong>stall an additional hydraulic turb<strong>in</strong>e at<br />
its Portodemouros power plant, to use<br />
the tidal flow. Initially, this plant was<br />
equipped with two large vertical Francis<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>es, but this flow was by-passed<br />
when these large turb<strong>in</strong>es were out of service,<br />
with the consequent loss of energy.<br />
The design submitted by VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong>ed the contract for the<br />
electromechanical equipment for this<br />
project. The plant is located <strong>in</strong> Galicia,<br />

resulted <strong>in</strong> an order for the supply of<br />
four Semikaplan vertical turb<strong>in</strong>es,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the turb<strong>in</strong>e itself, control<br />
equipment, speed accelerator,<br />
generator, <strong>in</strong>let gates, and stop-logs.<br />
The same type of Semikaplan turb<strong>in</strong>es<br />
specially developed by VA TECH<br />
<strong>HYDRO</strong> <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> has been<br />
delivered before to the same client for<br />
other plants with satisfactory results.<br />
Tak<strong>in</strong>g advantage of the similar head<br />
and flow conditions of the two stations,<br />
the northwestern region of Spa<strong>in</strong> - recently<br />
known worldwide due to the<br />
Prestige accident - where Union<br />
Fenosa is the most important utility. The<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and management of this<br />
project was entrusted to Soluziona<br />
Ingenieria, Union Fenosa´s eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
company, which has taken turnkey responsibility.<br />
The project presents specific<br />
difficulties, s<strong>in</strong>ce the erection work,<br />
and ma<strong>in</strong>ly the civil works and connection<br />
to the exist<strong>in</strong>g penstock, have to be<br />
made with the plant <strong>in</strong> service and<br />
therefore, the duration and schedul<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of downtimes are of vital importance to<br />
the customer. Follow<strong>in</strong>g these criteria,<br />
the proposal designed by VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> is based on m<strong>in</strong>imiz<strong>in</strong>g these<br />
downtimes and reduc<strong>in</strong>g the head loss<br />
at the connection to the new branch<br />
with the exist<strong>in</strong>g penstock, us<strong>in</strong>g a design<br />
which shortens erection time and a<br />
project management which assures the<br />
coord<strong>in</strong>ation of the delivery dates of the<br />
different components to have them<br />
available just at the time they are required<br />
on site. Both approaches, de-<br />
located on the same river, the<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>e design has been the same for<br />
all units, and the construction itself is<br />
carried out almost simultaneously, <strong>in</strong> a<br />
record time, as requested by the client.<br />

Ingeniería, the VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
department <strong>in</strong> Madrid, the<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> facility <strong>in</strong> Algete, the<br />
generator supplier -Indar- and the<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> project manager. The<br />
scope of supply <strong>in</strong>cludes an 11 MW<br />
vertical Francis turb<strong>in</strong>e, a synchronous<br />
generator, an ND 1700 butterfly valve, a<br />
penstock of 12 m <strong>in</strong> length, an outlet<br />
tube <strong>in</strong> concrete from the draft tube to<br />
the downstream level with an ND 2000<br />
<strong>in</strong>sulation valve just at the draft tube<br />
outlet, an oil pressure system, a digital<br />
speed governor, a cool<strong>in</strong>g system,<br />
erection, and commission<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
