First Industrial Unit in Operation at Aubas (France)
The first industrial unit of
VA TECH HYDRO’s ECOBulbTM turbine
generator was successfully
put into commercial operation in
Aubas, central France, on October
31, 2002. The private customer
Mr. Farges is enthusiastic about his
new unit and has already received
several visits by interested private
energy producers.
This first project consisted in replacing
a damaged asynchronous generator in
a forty-year old unit with a modern permanent
magnetic rotor and a new
stator. No changes were made on
the hydraulics, providing a unique
opportunity to measure the increase in
generator efficiency. Other minor modifications
in the water tightness concept
and in the synchronizing of the unit
were also made in order to increase reliability
and minimize maintenance requirements.
All of ECOBulbTM ‘s electrical
and mechanical features like power
output, power factor, and quality of
power currently equate to VA TECH
HYDRO’s calculations. This gives a
sound basis for further development of
the ECOBulbTM range.
New order for one 2.5 MW unit for
Casamozza (Corsica, France)
By the end of 2002, the private
company Société Hydro éléctrique
du Golo in Corsica (France) awarded
VA TECH HYDRO in France an engi-
neering and manufacturing contract for
one 2.5 MW ECOBulbTM unit to be installed
on the river Golo, just south of
Bastia. The decisive arguments in favor
of the ECOBulbTM technical solutions
were the absence of step-up gear,
the high overall efficiency and the
low-maintenance design. Optimum
integration in the narrow gorge as well
as the danger of submersion of the
turbo generator in case of floods supported
the other features. During the
engineering phase, VA TECH HYDRO
also performed several optimization
steps with respect to the water passages
and improved the flow pattern at
the entrance of the unit while using CFD
calculations.
Additional project under development
In Canada, Innergex II has awarded
VA TECH HYDRO in Canada an engineering
contract for two single
regulated ECOBulbTM units of approx.
4 MW each a project named Sonoco. The
engineering work has been completed
and manufacturing will start soon.
KEY PROJECTS
During the industrialization phase, additional
projects with typical features
will be selected to develop the ECO-
BulbTM range from 1 to 4 MW and for
heads from 3 to 15 m head. Additionally,
at the beginning of 2003 VA TECH
HYDRO in France was awarded an engineering
contract for two single regulated
ECOBulb units of 1 MW each
for heads of less than 3 m and
2,600 mm in runner diameter, for
the Paullo power plant in Italy.
