JAYBIRD
SACRAMENTO MUNICIPAL UTILI-
TY DISTRICT (SMUD) signed a contract
with VA TECH HYDRO USA in
October 2002 for the design and
supply of two Pelton – replacement
runners, manufactured in reliable
HIWELD technology in Linz.
The HIWELD technology uses runner
disks and runner buckets made of
high-quality forged stainless steel,
welded together in areas of low and
safe stress levels. Thus areas of the
buckets subjected to high stress are
made of top quality forged materials.
Finally these characteristics were the
decision basis of SMUD for placing the
order with VA TECH HYDRO against
conventional cast runners. The Jaybird
power station, located east of Sacramento
in California, which includes
two vertical Pelton turbines with six
nozzles, will receive delivery of the first
runner within one year and the second
will follow two weeks later.
AGUA PRIETA
VA TECH HYDRO in Switzerland has
received an order for the supply of
two additional MicroGuss replacement
runners for Comisión Federal
de Electricidad (CFE) in Mexico.
CFE has an installed capacity of
9,400 MW in hydropower and supplies
more than 90 % of the Mexicans
with energy. MicroGuss is a fabrication
method for Pelton runners employing
forged materials in highstress
zones. Resistance to corrosion
fatigue is significantly higher than of
conventional castings and prevents
cracking in bucket roots.
MicroGuss runners feature increased
lifetime, plant output, safety,
and availability as well as reduced
maintenance expenses. The new Pelton
runners, with a weight of more
than 20 t each, will be delivered in Mai
2004 and June 2004, respectively.
