Kriens-based VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> was<br />
awarded a contract by the operators<br />
of Reck<strong>in</strong>gen power plant to upgrade<br />
and modernize one of their Kaplan<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
Built 65 years ago, the station is situated<br />
10 km to the east of Waldshut on the<br />
Rh<strong>in</strong>e. The scope of supplies <strong>in</strong>cludes a<br />
set of new runner blades, a guide wheel<br />
r<strong>in</strong>g, discharge r<strong>in</strong>g, and draft tube cone<br />
to allow for an <strong>in</strong>crease of the runner<br />
diameter from 6,200 mm to 6,450 mm.<br />
Furthermore, the exist<strong>in</strong>g turb<strong>in</strong>e controller<br />
will be replaced by a digital TC<br />
1703 governor of the NEPTUN series.<br />
This upgrad<strong>in</strong>g project is designed to<br />
boost the annual energy production of<br />
the refurbished turb<strong>in</strong>e No. 1 by 3 %. A<br />
subsequent upgrad<strong>in</strong>g of turb<strong>in</strong>e No. 2<br />
would result <strong>in</strong> a 5.7 % <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> overall<br />
annual energy production. Reconstruction<br />
and modernisation work is<br />
scheduled to start <strong>in</strong> January 2004.<br />

BOSNIA<br />
JABLANICA<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> has signed a<br />
follow-up contract for the modernization<br />
of unit 2 of Jablanica<br />
hydropower station, located <strong>in</strong><br />
Bosnia-Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a, 80km south<br />
of Sarajevo.<br />
This contract follows the successful<br />
refurbishment of three other units over<br />
the past three years for Elektroprivreda<br />
Bosne I Hercegov<strong>in</strong>e, Bosnia’s largest<br />
electricity provider.<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> will supply the<br />
Jablanica plant, which dates back to<br />
1954, with various components <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a new runner, distributor, turb<strong>in</strong>e<br />
shaft, governor and correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />
oil hydraulic unit as well as three<br />
butterfly valves for units 1 to 3. Deliv-<br />
ery will take place with<strong>in</strong> eleven months<br />
and VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> will supervise the<br />
<strong>in</strong>stallation of the equipment. With<strong>in</strong><br />
less than 20 months the plant will be fully<br />
operational. Refurbishment will <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
the plant’s peak power by 22%<br />
and peak efficiency by 7%. Once all five<br />
units have been modernized, the additional<br />
annual energy production of more<br />
than 50,000 MWh will supply 100,000<br />
households with clean energy.<br />

INDIA<br />
MUNIRABAD<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> <strong>in</strong> India has executed<br />
an order for the modernization<br />
of 40-year old Munirabad hydropower<br />
plant for VVNL (former KEB) <strong>in</strong><br />
the state of Karnataka, realiz<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
significant improvement <strong>in</strong> plant performance.<br />
The contract was signed <strong>in</strong> December<br />
2000 and all the three Kaplan units have<br />
been successfully commissioned <strong>in</strong> the<br />
year 2002. In addition to other overhaul<strong>in</strong>g<br />
activities, the major scope of work<br />
consisted <strong>in</strong> the replacement of the exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
hydromechanical governors with digital<br />
electronic governors and the exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
excitation system with a microprocessorbased<br />
static excitation system. The order<br />
is of special significance s<strong>in</strong>ce it is the<br />
third consecutive order <strong>in</strong> the state of Karnataka<br />
placed by the same customer.<br />

The contract for the upgrad<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
three Francis turb<strong>in</strong>es and govern<strong>in</strong>g<br />
systems came <strong>in</strong>to force <strong>in</strong><br />
October 2002. Rehabilitation of this<br />
power plant, located <strong>in</strong> the south of<br />
India, will allow our customer,<br />
KSEB, to improve energy production<br />
and services. F<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g will be<br />
assured by a Swiss mixed credit.<br />

KLONG THUNG PHEN<br />
VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> has achieved the<br />
first sales success with compact turb<strong>in</strong>es<br />
<strong>in</strong> Thailand.<br />
In December 2002, a contract for<br />
the delivery of two compact Francis<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g synchronous generators,<br />
<strong>in</strong>let valves, and turb<strong>in</strong>e control<br />
cubicles was signed with the Thai Company<br />
ST POWER ENGINEERING<br />
CORPORATION Ltd. The scope of supply<br />
for VA TECH <strong>HYDRO</strong> will be <strong>in</strong>corporated<br />
<strong>in</strong> a general dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water supply<br />
project for the prov<strong>in</strong>ce of<br />
Chantaburi (approx. 200 km southeast<br />
of Bangkok), which consists of a dam,<br />
head water channel, surge tank, steel<br />
penstock, the powerhouse with adjacent<br />
tail water channel and reservoir.<br />
The client and operator of this hydropower<br />
plant is a department of the<br />
Thai M<strong>in</strong>istry of Energy, the Department<br />
of Energy Development and Efficiency<br />
(DEDE), based <strong>in</strong> Bangkok. Commission<strong>in</strong>g<br />
has been scheduled to take<br />
place early <strong>in</strong> the year 2004.<br />
