Perhaps by <strong>the</strong>n hard-copy newspapers will already have disappeared, and<br />

journalists and readers alike will have left behind <strong>the</strong> modes of writing and<br />

reading – <strong>the</strong> habits of thought – that even today are ineffably yet inextricably<br />

linked to paper.<br />

If it’s true that newspapers got some of <strong>the</strong>ir best qualities from <strong>the</strong><br />

paper <strong>the</strong>y were printed <strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> good news is <strong>the</strong> medium itself is not going<br />

anywhere. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Paper</str<strong>on</strong>g> is all around us, quietly doing <strong>the</strong> same work it’s been doing<br />

for centuries. Indeed, what’s most remarkable about <strong>the</strong> quest for e-paper is <strong>the</strong><br />

standard by which we measure its progress. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Paper</str<strong>on</strong>g> itself is <strong>the</strong> inescapable<br />

metaphor, <strong>the</strong> paradigm, <strong>the</strong> tantalizing goal. The new medium will be deemed<br />

a success if and when it is no l<strong>on</strong>ger just an imitati<strong>on</strong> of paper, but <strong>the</strong> real<br />

thing – when it becomes paper. It’s not as easy as it looks.<br />
