Miller won $20,000 by bowling a 236 in the final shootout, 20 pins greater than second place finisher Sam Carter, a senior bowler from Ben Lomond, CA, who earned $10,000. Finishing third was the 205 & under champion Darnell Pearson of Baltimore, MD, who shot a 193 and earned $7,500. A total of 340 entrants bowled the early bird tournament which paid out $10,000. Tony Marine wins $5,000 at Inaugural Classified Mini-Eliminator Anthony Marine, a senior bowler from Long Island, NY, won the first-ever handicap Mini-Eliminator sponsored by Columbia 300. Marine won $5,000 by bowling a 233 scratch game (251 with handicap) in the final shootout. Finishing second was another Long Islander, Damon Gizzi of St. James, who shot a 195 scratch (226 with handicap) and earned $2,500 and third was an expecting dad, Landon Young of Las Vegas who earned $1,250 with a 164 (197 handicap). The initial Classified Mini attracted a great crowd for its first event. The event paid over $30,000 in cash and prizes even though entry fees were as low as $75. The Mini-Eliminator has been running in Las Vegas since 1993 and has paid out over $20 million in prizes. The expansion into the handicap event was created to allow average league bowlers the chance to experience a big money tournament in Las Vegas. With over 330 recorded entries the event considered a huge success and will return in July. But my concerns reside in that just this past October we had 11 people in the department. Now we have seven. It’s just math,” Kloempken said. As a USBC member, that is the hardest part to take. During the USBC Open House I was very excited by what I saw in the Training Center and the direction their coaching department was headed. I was anxious to see the vision of Bowling’s governing body, and see ways that they could help redefine the sport. Local PBA Hall of Famer Del Ballard who was the International Relations Coaching Specialist also had his job at the USBC eliminated last week. “I am deeply saddened by the decrease in USBC memberships from a high of seven million to the current 2.1 million members. Obviously I was a casualty of that decrease. I am more concerned about the loss of my job, but overall it is of utmost importance to solve the problem with the decreasing membership,” Ballard said. Even though Steve and Del’s jobs were impacted, their passion for the sport of bowling continues to shine through. I now hope that the USBC will still have focus on those areas. The sport of bowling requires it.

The last game I had the front eight but threw the ball bad in the ninth to miss my shot at 800. I shot 255 the last game. I wasn’t thinking about shooting 800. The more I think about things the worse I will bowl, so I just tried to get up there and make good shots. Miki Jo’s tip of the week: My tip is to not over think it. It seems to me that when you do that you will end up putting to much pressure on yourself which leads to bad shots. Diane James We were able to get with Diane James from two week’s ago honor roll. Diane bowled a 268-226-267 for a 761 series at Cityview Lanes. Bowling has been a family affair for Diane. She grew up watching her mother, Sheryll Colline, bowling at AMF Irving Lanes, serving as president of the Irving Association and helping Jeannie Hulsey with the Quaker State Tournament. Diane’s brother, Wayne, bowls with her Friday nights in the T.G.I.F league. Cityview decided to put out the Red pattern for the first time and I guess it worked really well for me. Who is your favorite pro bowler? Norm Duke – he is versatile, he can do anything. I worked with Susie Minshew at a seminar and I got to know him. He is a nice, classy guy. I really don’t get to practice very much because I work 12 hour days. I am a supervisor in the welfare dept for the State of Texas and work has been really hectic the last few years. I have had to cut down on the number of leagues I bowl. Do you have anyone who coach’s you? I have been with Mark Baumann for over 15 years. He used to drill balls for Wicker, so he helps me with my game. Mark can tell me exactly what I’m doing wrong. Other bowling thoughts? How awesome that Kelly Kulick won. That just shows it’s anyone’s sport, it’s who throws the ball the best. Good for her. Diane’s tip of the week: Go back to the basics. Watch your ball go over your mark before you look up.
